Where the freshly graded dirt is, there was a 2 ft high 30 inch wide 50 ft long stone retaining wall which I built in 1986 when we put the garage addition on the house. It always collected leaves up top and on the bottom of the wall and had to be trimmed after mowing. There was also a wall around the big maple. I bought a Commercial Cub Cadet zero turn mower last year I don't mind riding around, but raking and trimming I hate. I'm only getting older. The ground height between the garage and the other side of the wall was about 2 ft I removed the wall and leveled the ground from the garage to the big maple.
I put most of the rocks on another stone wall behind the house. My son and I built the small one in front of the garage with a crushed stone base so I don't have to trim. Kubota just loved helping out moving the rocks load after load beats loading them onto a pickup then unloading by hand like I did in 86.
Back In the Spring we had a big thunderstorm that knocked down half of the big old maple tree, we cleaned up all the wood and the tree sat all spring and summer like you see it, once we lost the tree I knew I was going to change the whole front yard for easy mowing with my new Z turn. These pictures were taken the last week in August and 1st. week in September . Kubota dug all around the tree. The backhoe did a surprising good job breaking the roots.... course being right on the main road at an intersection with two stop signs Kubota attracted a lot of attention especially the fat man riding on the back. I did a lot of work with the backhoe in the rear of the house so by the time I got to the tree I have to admit I was pretty good scratching the dirt off the roots the hoe was now an extension of my hand, otherwise I would look like a real chump out on display.
.
I Hosed off as much dirt as I could, my thought was I could tie a rope way up high and with the leverage Kubota would just pull it over. I know the rope in the picture is not at the top but I realized why bother it's not going to happen that tree was not going anywhere.
So I hired an escavator to take the tree down.
The large Deere was no match for the vulnerable and disabled tree,
Kubota feeling a little inadequate was caught hiding in the bushes.
Kubota filled in the hole with 10 yards of fill, removed the rest of the bushes on the front lawn, I had trucked in three 18 yard loads of top soil and spread it, york raked the whole front yard level and smooth. Then I bought some trees from my friend at the local nursery. We planted five new trees and transplanted three. Kubota dug the holes for the trees and brought fresh top soil to each tree. To my surprise when the trees were delivered my friend brought his crew with him and before I knew what was happening all these guys were all over the place putting these new trees in the ground. Glad they stayed and helped I thought they were just dropping them off. Good thing I probably would still be doing it. They came back the next day and hydro seeded the whole lawn, I don't have any more pictures of the completed project, In the Spring I'll update. If you read this far and you're still awake Thanks for taking the time to view my pics.
