Depending on ones individual situation, I don't see anything wrong with a burn pile. I do it once or twice per year depending on the amount, the weather and wind etc. It works okay for me in my semi-rural area. Some of the large stuff is used for an annual huge bonfire for friends and family.
Yet I also utilize my chipper/shredder as the need arises along with the Cyclone Rake. Some of the shredded and chipped mixture of various tree limbs, leaves, pine cones, needles and grass is tilled into my garden once per year. Especially the chipped and shredded Cedar limbs are used as paths through the garden. It's still a lot of work whichever way I go.
