Where are you located? What kind of plant material?

I have some white cedar and spruce that are dead looking--or on their way. They used to be behind other trees that were removed last summer. That exposed them to the cold & dry winter winds. Last winter was hard on some things.

If you are in a drought area, tree mortality can follow drought by 2 years or so.

Lots of winter burn in this area. Mainly on the south west side of the tree.

Located south western pa. They are between 3 ft to 6 feet tall.
Cheers.

We had a terrible winter in the mid Atlantic. Trees that would have had no issues, suffered terrible die back. Or total loss.

Without pics and specific information about the plants, diagnosis is difficult. If Eastern White Pines, you might have borers. If junipers, then winter kill. Could be anything, really.

We're not in a drought, so don't water them.

Post some pics. Then we can play plant doctor. ;o)

A lot of pines and evergreens here are dying due to a harsh winter. IMO

Nursery friend says winter burn + maybe a bug. They recommend 4oz per foot height of 12-12-12 fertilizer (found 13-13-13 at Home Depot) sprinkled around the crown. Do it before a rain shower.

You know I was going to post this question. We have skyrocket junipers, finally fully grown and this winter hurt them. They are all brown (winter burn) and I do not see much if any green on it. I hit it with a folar spray but nothing happened. I will have to try the fert before I cut them out.

Many diseases and pests of evergreens in the north. If you inspected them last fall and they seemed fine, many that are not hardy (even some that are) in zone 5 took a big hit. Especially if they were in an open area and got a lot of wind. We had several nights, not just 1 or 2, of 15 to 20 below and windy. They just could not handle it. Just depends on the species of evergreen you lost whether bugs, disease, weather, or a combination took them out.
