A local muffler shop manager made a carport using tailpipe material bent rafters and socketed together then welded. He got the material wholesale but its an idea anyway. Find someone local with a press (a junkyard) and get a quote to bend up EMT tubing you supply from Home Depot, then find a local welder (a shop teacher maybe) to tack it all together.
But it will be hard to compete with the price of those complete kits.
