hey ya'll i finally got my tuthil/fillrite automatic diesel pump assembled but tuthill didn't take into account that a person might want to put a fuel/water block filter between the pump and the nozzle.my goldenrod filter has to female fittings, the pump street l and the hose are also female fittings.so,i have decided that i need a piece of metal threaded on both ends,i think that this is called a threaded nipple,to attach the goldenrod filter to the pump.my question is what material should i be looking for to do this project?some people on here said that the pipe fitting should NOT be made of galvanized material.so whats left?does it have to be a special diesel kind of material or can i just run down to the neighborhood lowes and pick some up?also, what is black pipe fittings made up of?
sorry for so many questions, just don't want to screw it up now.
thanks,

Black pipe is just plain steel.

I personaly don't think it makes a donky do. Black pipe will rust if you do not paint it. Maybe not with diesel on it. I would use brass myself.

is there anything in brass that would flake off or break down like the galvanized fittings do?
thanks for all the replies, keep 'em coming.

My Fill-right pump came with a galvanized elbow to join the pump to the hose. It probably doesn't make any difference if you add a short galvanized pipe nipple to the setup. Since your nipple would be before your filter, any junk from the galvanized nipple would be filtered out anyway. If you are worried, then use black metal pipe and paint the outside (just clean it with mineral spirits first).

I think you might get corrosion using brass, since you would be mixing metal types. Maybe someone else would know for sure.

steve, how can you tell that the elbow is galvanized?

I think its possible to overthink this---disimilar metals would only be a problem if water were concerned.
Diesel is oil.
Steel likes oil.
Go to the hardware store and get whatever you like.

Black pipe is commonly used to plumb an oil tank. If it's outside like the natural gas lines are, give it a coat of paint or it will quickly start to rust.

I may be in the minority here.. But I had always heard ( from farmers... ) that the reason you didn't used galvanized with diesel was due to leaching.. not flaking or corrosion..

For my Tuthill, I took the filter block to Napa and made up a brass fitting & nipple. The Tuthill filter block is cast aluminum which is a fairly inert metal for use with brass. Brass and aluminum do not rust, and need no ancillary coatings. Teflon tape the threads and you are in business.
