Does anyone have a link to some plans for a chicken plucker? Any advice on such a project would be quite helpful.

The ones I've seen consist of a SS tub with rubber fingers inside. The tub rotates and the friction plucks the birds.

What do you think of an old washing machine on the spin cycle? All you might need are those hard rubber fingers to mount to the inside of the tub.

Just don't add detergent or bleach........

Pretty interesting machine schmism, and you don't need to be a "rocket scientist" to build or operate it.

Thanks folks, these replies are very helpful. I'm still on the same side of the ridge Scott; our house in Pawlet is for sale if you know any interested parties :D . I'm wrapping up construction of the Danby home now. The chicken plucker is a project to build with the kids over at Smokey House.

Regards, Chad

ya we have talked about starting a small chicken operation.... raiseing some broilers. Seems to be the perfect "livestock" for a hobby farm.

Our biggest issue would be finding a market and prep'ing birds. Again the back yard poultry had a really good artical last year on small-ish broiler operations.

Seems there are a few people that found other people in the area with slightly larger operation, and simply grew "extra" birds for them, so they didnt have to worry about prep'ing them. just grow them take them down the road on harvest day.

Ideally thats what we would LIKE to do, but to my knowledge there are no other growers in the area. Otherwise it seemed like a great "part time" endeavor (meaning full time for 8 weeks then your off till you do another batch)
