I would like to plant a few acres of Corn, sunflowers and cucumbers next year and have been looking for a planter or seeder to make the job easier. Thinking JD had a 2-row planter I stopped at the local dealer and was told they offered nothing like that. Then stopped by the NH dealer and was told they offer nothing and the only company they knew of who did went out of business. Does anyone know where I might purchase a two-row planter or seeder able to handle corn?

Deere used to make a two row planter called a 'versa-planter" or something like that. It was on the web site up untill 2000 and now it's not there anymore. If you push the guy a little harder he may be able to find one somewhere for you. Try searching on "planters" or "small acreage implements" or "specialty growing" and see what you find. Also keep an eye on your local ag businesses. If you see small plots ( >1 acre) stop in and ask them how they are getting their seed in. Let us know what you find, I'm sure you're not alone in this.

You might want to check out Sweet Farm Equipment, they have some used and not that far from you.

Speaking of Sweet Farm Equip.

I searched and searched locally and internet for a 3ph broadcast spreader. They run locally for $450.00 - 550 for a 300# capacity model. I found Sweet and they had a 820# model for $289 + 79 shipping to PA. Ordered Monday AM, delivered yesterday (Wed) noon. Real nice machine, NO hassles.

I would recommend Sweet.

The broadcast-type spreaders are OK for fertilizer and grass seed, etc., but you are probably seeking maybe a 2 row drill.

Don't know if you have run across this on the Web or not, but this outfit has a listing of farm equip dealers with Web sites for each state. Here is the one for Ohio:

Maybe worth some browsing and/or phone calls. Sometimes these dealers have some used/refurb equip. that could fill the bill, but it's hit or miss.

Alternatively, you might be able to find a nearby farmer who has something that would work and either lets you borrow/rent or will be neighborly and do it for you.

How is that 4610 working? Mine has just gone over the 50 hr. mark... so far it does anything I can dream up without even working hard.

Steve, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services office in our county has a planter that they rent. Our Pheasants Forever chapter uses it for habitat projects and individuals can rent it also. The one in our county is busy during certain times of the year so you need to reserve a time. I can just call our NRCS, reserve the planter for a weekend and they deliver it or you can pick it up.

The PF chapter also does habitat projects in the county, you could join, get a good deal on seed and then have them plant it or plant it youself. Last time I got 5 acres of wildflower seed and 10 acres of switch grass. I will probably broadcast the wildflower, but rent the no-till planter for the switchgrass and to do some corn and sorghum.

I own a JD Planter called Model 71 Flexi-Planter. It is a two row planter made for small plots. You can get many different seed plates. I use mine to plant about 2 acres of sweet corn every year. They are pretty hard to find - I have seen a few on ebay(that's where I got mine). Sweet has a new 1R, but it seems a little pricey. There are several other brands of older 2R planters (Ford, Farmall, etc) I bet you could find one at auction.

Good Luck!
