Good day yall, Its been a while since I posted in here. I rebuilt a 1965 Ford 3000 diesel and she is purring right along. I love my tractor. I live in the city so I have to drag her to woods every spring and fall to plant food plots for my deer herd. They call it work hahaha I love it. Well I am thinking about getting a 2 row planter to add to my arsenal of play toys. As of now I plant 5 acres (10-12 food plots) with the biggest being 1 acre. I will increase the total size next spring due to the farmers around me shooting up my herd at night, Dmapp program. But everything I do now is broad casted, and to be honest I could keep broad casting and be fine. Just have a itch to plant in straight rows??? I'm funny that way. I have never did it before so I am kind of clueless as to what I would really need. But am a fast learner and graduated from the school of hard knocks back in the nineteen hundreds.
But I was wondering if some of yall could help me decide on a type of planter I think I would need. I have been looking at the john deere 7100 , I think the 71 is to old for parts?? I see a blue Kinze planters to match my pretty blue tractor, parts?? Would love a Covington planter just trying to ok in my brain the cost of 3500 for a toy that I will use a few times a year. I see why the farmers are going broke, this stuff ain't cheap. I will give you some history as to what i'm doing know so you guys can have a better idea as to what i'm doing.
This coming weekend I will bush hog my spring summer crops down and then spray it with round up. 2-3 weeks from now I will burn the plots and till under (not disc). Then I rent a fertilizer buggy and 1 ton of fertilizer and throw it out. Lightly till some plots pending on the what seeds I plant. And or cultipack the plots. And or spread seeds over the plot and cultipack them in or drag the plots. Kind of depends on what I'm planting. I use the products from the white tale institute.
Well somewhere in my mind I am thinking this upcoming spring I would like to plant in rows, corn , millet and sunflowers and soy beans.. Now with that being said would I need a planter with a fertilizer box on it?? And what is the inspecticide box? can it be used for fertilizer in stead? I assume I will have more questions. Like will a planter work on tilled soil? I till 6" deep and its like garden soil out of the bag, soft and fluffy. I guess I am looking for pros and cons of a planter and seeing if its right for me.
Thank you
