Planting rye on horse pastures for winter?

I'm thinking of doing rye on my 4ac of horse pastures for the winter (maybe a little bit on the yard as well). I've only got 1 horse and 2 donkeys, but the fescue I have down there now all went dormant for a few months last year and we had to feed which got expensive.

Where do I buy a large quantity of rye? I should need between 400-500lbs best I can tell, but I dont want to go buy 10 50lb bags at the local southern states for $49 a bag, surely there is some stuff that farmers use that must be cheaper.

49$ a bag. wow! usually 15-20$ here.

Paid $26 per 50lb bag just a few weeks ago here in West Georgia at my local Mom & Pop feed store.

You aren't overgrazing are you- that would take it down and after a point- not much would come up.

There is a definite difference in Rye grasses, and the cost will reflect that too.

I live in North Florida, near the GA line, I used Rye-wrens Abruzzi and jumbo tetraploid ryegrass. The rye will come up first and the rye grass later, thus providing grass most of the winter. Hope this helps. PaulWS

TSC in Wylie had the Rye on sale for 24.95 one weekend, usual price was 34.95. We put out 400 lbs on 6 acre pasture and it is beautiful and getting more beautifuler.

CW Harmon's in Floyd VA has rye seed for $16.55/bushel. a bushel is 56 lbs. that's not too far from Roanoke VA.
