While we were installing the big steel tanks we used every-thing we could get our hands on , Oil barrels ,Water tanks,Undustrial chemical drums and pesticide containers and all were fine , Gas is a different story i have seen gas dissolve a pesticide container .

Got a manual? pump from Tractor supply and 4 plastic 55 gal. barrels on Wed. Filled one up today, then filled the tractor. Seems like will be a good system for how I work. Will be great not having to run and get 5 gal cans filled on a regular basis.

Try not to pay for them. I picked up two 30 gal and four 55 gal of about twenty at a car wash that was desperate to get rid of them.

Update report.

I've been using the 55 gal. drum without incident. The manual pump seems to work well.

Several small problems.
1.The plastic lid on the drum flexes when I pump making the pump sl. unstable. Plan on cutting a piece of plywood to put under the pump to spread out the force a bit.

2. With pumping from the drum it's hard to see how much fuel is in the tank. Have to keep checking.

3. Would like to have the hose a bit longer so don't have to position tractor so close to drum. That of course would make #2 more of an issue.
All in all I'm happy with my setup. I don't find I have to stop midway through a day to spend a 1/2 hour getting fuel I should have had on hand. Also haven't spilt a drop of fuel since starting this system. Goodbye 5 gal cans.

I used a blue poly drum when Katrina caused all the problems. The only snag I had was the gasket on the bungs did not like diesel fuel. I have "viton" gaskets on my military fuel cans but don't know where to get them for a standard 2" bung. JC

heymack,

Actually that's what started this thread. I contacted the person who has them (a food packager) and they didn't know the answer. They think they are okay for biodiesel. Don't know if regular diesel would eat them up more than biodiesel.

FYI, Biodiesel is more corrosive than regular diesel. That's why some older engine seals are not approved for biodiesel, and that's why when some folks switch over to Biodiesel, their fuel filter plugs up quickly - it cleans all the crud out of the tank and fuel lines.
