Plastic Toolox Question ????

   / Plastic Toolox Question ???? #11
As far as I can tell, nothing wrong with using plastic. It is lightweight, doesn't rust and many are waterproof. The plastic ammo cans seem to be the best choice. I mounted plastic tool boxes to both my tractors about 5 years ago. One has metal latches which have started to rust while the other is all plastic and the plastic latches are just as good as the day I put them on. I did have to do some water proofing on the solid plastic one due to lots of penetrations with handles and other things. A hot glue gun worked well for this. I do keep my tractors under a shed so most direct sunlight is blocked except for late afternoon (west side is open) but I don't know how well they would work in sub-zero conditions since it rarely gets below 15F here in winter.

I tried a plastic ammo box clone on my tractor, lasted about 4 months before shaking itself to pieces.
Switched to same size metal box, still doing well after 2+ years. Neither box leaked water on wet days.

I do not live in a cold part of the country. My tool box is a Stanley weatherproof type and is going on four hard years old. Still works great:

This plastic toolbox has been on for a couple years with no issues. Actually like it better than the metal one I had on my old tractor.

I vote for the metal ammo box myself, preferably one with a padded arm rest.
