Put tractor in park and start only with your butt in the seat.

Yep! I’ve “caught” myself raising and lowering the bucket from the ground too. Not an issue except I had my hand on the loader arm near a pinch point once.......a cab provides some extra safety I guess!

Don't take much to hurt oneself when in hurry.

I agree,

Had a co worker bump the hydraulics of a forklift, while working between the dash and mast. If I hadn’t been there, it could have ended badly.
I occasionally will start a tractor and run the FEL while on the ground, but all precautions need to be made...or just sit in the seat.

What a terrible accident and tragedy for the family that will take a long time to recover from.

A side comment to this is the problem of advancing age and it's issues. Rural people like this have been working so hard, so long and so successfully over the decades that they fail to notice the subtle changes in abilities as they age. Reflexes, timing and ability declines and you have to be more careful as you get older. Arthritis makes rapid movements difficult and changes in cognitive function makes one more prone to accidents. Point is, be careful when you're young and a lot more careful when you're older. Stuff happens fast, especially when you're older and moving slower.

Hey there sixdogs - speak for yourself when talking about declining abilities. I turned 76 this summer and by golly - I can definitely notice MY declining abilities. My shoulder aches almost all the time - my hands hurt when they get too cold - my butt can not tolerate the seat on my motorcycle quite as long as it did last year. Everybody on the TV mumbles anymore and I have to increase the volume.

The only thing that has remained pretty constant - - I still like keeping the house fairly cool - - even now, in the winter.

Oh, I still remain my dam sweet 'ol self - that I've always been.

My + thoughts, wishes, and prayers for his family and friends.

I habitually start my tractor's motion going in reverse. Anyone living where things freeze up like rear tires to the ground surface should as well due to rear axle torque. Tractors can back flip real fast.

I rarely get on a machine to start it when warming it up. But I also, am conscious if it should start moving. ALWAYS! Without exception.
