I have a twin briggs and stratton motor in my MTD and it isnt getting any fuel. It starts and runs fine if I put fuel down the carb throat. I bought the fuel pump kit but that didnt change anything. There is vaccume suction coming from the lower part of the engine but when I take my fuel line off at the tank there is no suction. I replaced the fuel lines and filter and there still is no suction. I need help to fix my problem. Thanks.

Pull the fuel line between the fuel pump and carb. Put the end from the carb into a container. Turn the engine over does it pump fuel? If yes does it have any pressure at all. Should produce 2- 4 PSI possibly a little more.

Try having someone blowing in the tank with their mouth or some other form of low pressure non spark producng device while turning the engine over. Does it pump fuel now? If yes:

Is the hose from the tank to the fuel pump old and weather checked or cracked. if yes these can allow air to be sucked in Vs pulling gas from the tank.

These are low tech diaphragm pumps and probably don't generate a whole lot of vacuum so you may or may not feel any vacuum on the inlet hose.

That is the briggs opposed twin so the fuel pump is integral with the carb. The only way I have found to test the pump on those engines is to remove the air cleaner and top of the carb and then crank the engine and see if it blows fuel out the top of the carb.

Also is a good way to tell if there is any fuel in the carb bowl, if so then it is not a pump problem but something else plugged up.

I was having the same problem with my Kawasaki motor. One of the viewers told me the carb was plugged and to pull it and clean it. I did it (actually was pretty easy) and it has been running like a top. Even though the carb didn't look dirty, when I went to start it, it started fsater than ever. If you don't have a manual for your engine, check the Briggs website. I bet you can down load it. I found one for my 30 year old Briggs. Good luck.
