I am getting ready to install remotes on my tractor. I understand that I'll need a double-acting, open centered valve.

I want to do the following things with remotes:

1) Use a FEL-mounted meyer snowplow with 2 single-acting cylinders, or 1 double-acting cylinder.

2) Use a 3PH hydraulic winch.

On the Surplus Center website, I see the open-center, double-acting, single and double spool valves. Some of the valves say "motor spool". What does this mean. Do I have to choose a valve that will run a motor, or one that will not in order to power a winch?

Please help.

"Motor" spool valves are for, well...Motors:D But seriously, they keep the work ports open to the tank when the valve is in neutral so the motor can freewheel and so when the valve is closed the motor can coast to a stop instead of being stop abruptly causing damage.

Any dual active valve will power the 2 SA cylinders, the valve will see the two SA's as one DA.

You might look at the prince SV series stack valves, that way you can build the valve with the options you need.

So I don't want a motor-valve for a winch, correct?

I would think that I would NOT want the winch to free-wheel when I am not hitting the lever on the valve.

Well, What kind of winch is it? Direct drive, gear drive? Does it have a clutch to pay the cable out?

I am certainly no winch expert, but being that they operate so slow I don't so any harm in using a regular valve to operate on (others WILL disagree shortly) You might want a float position on it though so you can free-wheel it to pull the cable out.

Another thought: Most winches are only rated for about 1500PSI or so...might want to check the specs on it...

I was looking at Mile Marker Winches, and you are right about the 1500PSI...

That brings even more complications..

I see that some of the valves have adjustable reliefs that you can set. I could set one for the winch at 1500#, and 3000# for anything else...

Maybe?

Do some searching for post's by user "3RRL", he went through this very same thing IIRC and came up with a elegant solution-I just don't remember the details.

Kenny D and JJ:

Thanks for your help. At this point, I'm just getting the supplies for the remotes, and wanted to make sure I got the right valve. The hydraulic winch (with relief valve) will have to wait until next year... $$$$
