Plow and Disk?

DFB, I'm sure I could do a lot better in my pest control for the garden if I tried just a little bit, but what I've done is plant a big enough garden for me and the pests both./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I'm not a certified organic gardener, and have no intention of becoming one; however, so far I've not used any chemicals (neither pesticides, herbicides nor fertilizer) on the garden. If I get to the point that I can't raise more than we can eat, I'll change that. I do use some diazinon, malathion, and Logic around the house, in and around the shop and barn, and at least part of the yard.

And, yes, Moses would have been proud of our locust plague. wonder if using floating row cover would help to at least keep them off the garden plants I'm not sure if we'd be talking about the same thing or not, but last year my brother-in-law (about 4 miles from us) and our nearest neighbor each bought some fabric netting of some kind to put over their tomato plants and the grasshoppers ate right through it in both cases./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif I don't think any of the three of us would have hardly believed it if we hadn't seen it. And those two guys have tried a wide variety of pesticides and neither of them has a garden any more productive than mine. In fact, this year they've each gotten more stuff from my garden than they've gotten from their own./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Bird

Bird, I think it relates to food and water availability. I also noticed a sudden drop in the number of birds as soon as the oak trees started blooming. The oak worms and other food sources may have been so plentiful that the birds didn't need to come in to my feeders to feed. They are just now starting to come back because I have had to fill my feeders this week and it isn't squirrels. I hope this is a sign they will stay around for grasshopper snacks./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Thanks for the advice. As soon as I get some money I will know better what to look for.
