plow for bx 23

Hi. I am considering buying a BX23 this spring (my first riding tractor) and plan to use the tractor for assorted tasks such as mowing, hauling firewood, maintaining roads, ditches etc. I would also like to be able to plow and disk and acre or so of garden. I currently use a gravely to plow clay and would like something easier on my hands and arms. Is there a small plow that works with these tractors? Thanks.

When I bought my BX23 last fall, I asked my dealer about small plows. He said that they are available, but are fairly expensive because there are not many of them sold. Don't know if that is true or not.

Anyway, one of the reasons I was buying the tractor was to run a tiller (Land Pride RTA1550). My dealer told me that the tiller would do everything I needed with regard to ground breaking (which it certainly will!), so that is as far as the plow discussion went.

From the comments I have seen here on TBN, I would say that there is a fair body of opinion that says a tiller is a better way to go than a plow and disk, although I have also seen some posts from people who have gone the plow/disk route with great success.

(My tiller experience up to that time was limited to several decades of operating various three to five horsepower walk-behind tillers. Of course, you need to have the ground pretty well broken up before using one of those. Tractor-mounted tillers are an entirely different creature!)

I have a 1-bottom 10" plow I use behind my BX1800. I had it from my Cub 1811 and adapted the sleeve hitch to a 2" reciever and use it. I have only used last year and won't be using for another month or so, but it seems to work fine for me. Here is a thread with some information and pictures. I was lucky and picked mine up clearanced at Lowes for ~$100 bucks a few years ago. They were originally ~$190. You can also pick up 12" from Norhtern Tool I think that is 3-point mount (if my recollection is correct).

I think he just wanted to sell the tiller. You could have gone to TSC and got a single bottom Cat-1 pretty cheap.

My brother owns an old single bottom plow and this year, actually in the next couple of weeks if it's dry enough, I plan on using it to turn over my garden completely. The past 2 years I've just used my tiller and thought I'd go deeper this year and add more lime...it's pretty hard stuff.

A small single bottom 12" 'mini' plow, remember your 3 point is cat I but narrow, can be had new for about $200, either through a regular dealer like us or at the discount TSC type companies. Don't plow too deep if you are planting more than a row or two because when it comes time to put the right hand tires in the furrow you may hit bottom and find yourself high and dry.

I'm not so sure about that. I can take the 26" drawbar off my old 8N and put it on my BX23. On the other hand, the BX23's 3PH won't raise high enough to reach the Cat. 1 pins on my old two-bottom Ferguson plow.

Good comment about getting "high centered," though!
