Plow Recommendation 3910

Looking to get a plow for the 3910 and wondering what size and number to get. I would like to say that the soil in my area is pretty hard, so keep that in mind when making recommendations. I appreciate any advice anyone has to offer. Btw, its a 2wd model.

You will be fine with a 3 X 12" or 3 X 14",~~~~~3 X 16" may be a max load or a little too much.

This assumes plow is in good condition with reasonably sharp ground contact parts.


You should post your tire type and whether or not liquid filled. Above recommendations are conservative and will be fine regardless of tire type and whether filled or not.

Be aware that you do not want to turn up sub-soil, only the top soil layer.

So dig a pit on your property to determine the depth of your top soil before shopping for a moldboard plow.

A 12" plow will turn soil 5-7" deep.

A 14" plow will turn soil 6-8" deep.

A 16" plow will turn soil 7-9" deep.

Rule of thumb is 1 HP per inch of plow. HP is taken at the drawbar. A 3910 is right at 35 drawbar HP. I would personally look at a two 16 inch bottom plow. Here in our area we have a lot of clay that is difficult to turn. Sandy soil is easier. Our old D17 Allis Chalmers would pull 3-16" plows all day. They were rated at 48 drawbar HP. Our 185 Allis would pull 4-16's. That 1 HP per inch rule is pretty accurate.

Thanks for sharing the rule of thumb. I found this listing that is local to me. Not sure what the dimensions of the plows are, but I've heard mf plows were halfway decent.

With my 3910 I've pulled 3-16's and it did it well enough, it was a little rough as some ground was soft and some of it was more sloped than other patches of dirt.
But on the same ground with 2-16's you can let the plow cut as deep as it wants, you can pull it whatever speed you want, and the tractor won't ever seem underpowered.

Ferguson and Ford Plows are easy to pull and parts are in good supply. You will not go wrong with either one of them.
