I'm rural, on 3 acres. Farm land all around. We got a few inches of new snow last night. Maybe 8" total on the ground, with bigger drifts. Sometime this morning, they/someone plowed a big path from one end to the other in the snow, in the 80 acres next to me. I didn't hear the tractor or see it. Why in the world would they/he do that?

I've seen similar in the farmland on the Skagit flats. I believe they did it for a drainage channel for when the spring rains come and the winter snows start to melt.

I used to snowblow paths with my skidsteer around my fields to walk my dog in during the winter, including a path connecting to the end of the driveway (walk the dog down the driveway, then up the path in the field to the house).

one winter when I first started doing it, we had a mini thaw with heavy rains. My path connecting the field to the driveway turned into a water chute (then ice).

I changed his I made the path to the driveway after that. Headed it straight down to the end of the field, the back up to the driveway (instead of down).

one of life's little lessons......

If I see anything out there, I'll post it. He made a pass of about 3/4 around, injecting anhydrous when the ground was already froze about a month ago. They came back that night and spread dry fertilizer.

Path for coyote hunter(s)? Don't have a clue.

Around here something similar is done mostly alongside east-west roads to serve as snow fencing as mentioned a few posts back. It's usually the municipal equipment doing this and three or more parallel passes the width of the blade apart. It helps reduce the need for plowing the road or highway
