Rotary Cutter Plowing with my Bush hog??

My Case CX80 had the dial setup, but it never worked all that well and the position control on my MF does not work correctly, so even if the original height was set correctly, the height could change during operation and cause implements to ground out or scalp.

As mentioned, if this is the case, check chains work.

Your 3930 should have an adjustable stop on the draft control lever so you can preset the lowest height of an impliment. basicly its a bolt with a thumbnut thats easily adjusted in the lever slot. If its been removed, a 1/4-20 with a couple of flat washers can be substituted.
As mentioned level the mower deck to the tractor, with the adjustable arm on the 3 point. Also adjust toplink so the back end is an inch or two higher than the front with the dolly wheel adjusted to be firmly on the ground.

Just pick front end up till its about 6 inches off ground,,might have to adjust tail wheel to make it at least level[more or less],and level side to side like one of the guys said to,,you can than lower a little on smooth ground, than raise for the dippy humpy ground.

I've read some good detailed posts here on how to set up a rear cutter. The basics are that you first level the cutter side to side on level ground. Then set the front height with the 3pt lift. Then adjust the rear wheel so that the rear blade edge is 1" or so HIGHER than the front. That allows the cut stuff to get out. If you are wanting to shred it up more, lower the rear so it is level with the front. The down side of that is it takes more HP to turn as it cuts and re-cuts.

Lot's of good info here, but.......

I've been shredding for 20+ years and I've yet to adjust a cutter that didn't at some point scab the ground and leave some marks. Mounted implements are simply more prone to their mounting point than the terrain they are used upon. What looks flat as a fritter ain't always so. What looks like a terrestrial mess to mow is not always such a chore.

A rear finish mower is ideal for the middle-regions that are too much for a riding mower but less than what's needed in a shredder/bush hog/rear cutter/rear mower. Shredders/hogs are not scalpels and you can't use one as such.

The "draft control" is for ground engaging equipment (e.g. a plow) and has no affect on using a cutter. It only lifts the 3 pt when it encounters a very heavy drag such as the plow slowing the tractor (and then it only works if you have the top link set up properly for it.)

As many have said, keep the front of the cutter higher, especially on uneven ground and making turns.

If you have the tail wheel set for the rear to be fairly low, you may be able to drag the cutter on straight , flat sections for the lowest cut, but you'll probably do a bit of digging/gouging. Usually keeping the front about 6" high makes for the least manual intervention.

You haven't said what brand of cutter your operating.....and that could be a big factor. Some cutters have a nice tapered skid plate at the leading edge. Those will resist digging into the ground as much IMO.

I like to cut close to the ground too and have a KK rotary cutter. There is little angle and not much material for the cutter to skid on, so it's going to dig in if I'm not careful. I considered altering the front of the cutter at one time.....but I have learned to live with it.

I tapered the front of my King Kutter rotory cutter like you are considering (cut the corners up 2" and tapered them back around 12").
It made a huge differance.
Before I had to cut at 6" deep or more or the cutter would plow the ground really bad. Now I can cut at 3 or 4" deep with very little plowing. It is like a differant cutter, SO much better than it was. And it mows a nicer looking cut being able to set the front of the cutter lower to ground.
