Tires Plowing with turf tires

Paul, much depends upon the type of soil you have, moisture content at the time, etc. On my property there's no way you could pull a 2 bottom plow unless you kept it very shallow. I have to use the 4WD with ag tires to pull a one bottom plow with my B2710 if I want it to go very deep.

I am in the market this spring for a sub soiler or a middle buster to do some trench work for electric and drains. Anyone have experience with either? I have a 2710 so I don't think that I'll have problems with being able to pull it.
I have seen a few units Howse, Northern Tool etc. but I'll welcome suggestions from you seasoned "farmers" on which to get (or both if practical)
Thanks for any help you can give.

DaleW, I also have a B2710 and have a 15" middle buster from Tractor Supply Co. $99.99. It's great for digging the potatoes./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I don't use it a lot, but I've also used it to dig old tree roots out the ground and hung it on roots I couldn't pull, I've used it to dig trenches, and I've loaned it to a neighbor to use behind his 35hp tractor and we haven't been able to bend or break it./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Their subsoiler is listed at $139 in the 1997 catalog, but I haven't used one. Looks like it should be capable of going 6 or 7" deeper into the ground; just another of those tools I've thought about buying, but haven't.

Bird-
How wide of path does your 1 bottom turn, and is it safe to say a 2 bottom would be double that?

Paul, I've never measured or thought much about how wide a path, except to say it ain't wide enough. I got all my attachments "new" except that old single bottom moldboard, or turning, plow. And it's one that was horsedrawn until someone cut it down and did some welding to make a 3-point hitch, and I got it real cheap from a neighbor. The problem is that the only way I've used that type of plow is that you make one pass around and on the next pass your right wheels run in the previously made furrow. With this old plow centered behind the tractor, it's too far left to do that very well. It I had much of that kind of plowing to do I'd definitely go buy a better plow, but it serves the purpose when I just want to tear the ground up real good and deep prior to tilling.

Dale:

I just bought a 15" middle buster from Southern States for $89 to do just what you're doing.

I'm going to try to trench for some electrical conduit from my house to the barn (about 150') and also for some water pipes from house to garden.

I just got the middle buster last weekend and did a very brief "test tench" and it seemed to be working as I expected.

Pictures and story to follow from this coming weekend...
