Tractor
Mitsubishi/Satoh Buck--S470
Hey Guys----I need your advise--I have a small garden tractor S-470 Buck 18.5 HP diesel---I have a tiller for the tractor that does a great job.
Now I need to unhook the tiller and row up my large garden. Tractor supply has a middle buster for about $130 bucks. I guess I could plow one way and than reverse the plowing to make a row--any suggestions on this.
Next--after the garden is rowed and planted--than I need to plow it until it gets to big. I have a bunch of small plows, I call them scratchers. Can I attach them and space them out on a bar of some type and just break the soil in between each row.
Need any great idea,s---I have hand tillers, but I want to use the tractor to cut down on the time.:)

I've used a middlebuster to break up a garden plot and it worked very well. After I broke it up, I went back over it with a cultivator that has 6 spring tines on it with chisel tips doing the actual digging. This also worked very well to break up the bigger clumps. As I final dressing, I can go back over it with the disc harrow, but will wait for Spring to do that.

The thing to point out with the middle buster is that it can/will dig some pretty deep rows if you let it dig down all the way. This will affect the spacing of the rows because the tires will want to drop down in the rows. In other words, the row spacing will probably end up being whatever the dimension is from the centerline of one rear tire to the center of the middlebuster (middle of tractor). You can vary this some by changing the spacing of your wheels (if they are adjustable).

As for your idea of using small plows to go in between the rows for weeding, that sounds like it will work just fine until the veggies get too tall. You'll need to space the rows for the tractor tire width, of course, and a toolbar to attach the sweeps or plows too.

Guys--Thank you for your input. Today I visted the Tractor Store and they can get me a middle buster next month---$130 bucks. The culivator with the small tines is great also. I have another idea on the culivator part---I have a box blade that has tines all across the box blade and can take out some if I chose, but I like the tool bar and adjustable tines.
I had a guy to tell me to get a heavy duty chain and this way I can prevent the the plows from going down to far--the chain if adjusted properly will allow you to plow at the same depth.
I also have a Befco 4 ft. tiller that I used to till the entire garden. It was a hay field prior to tilling---I know me and the grass or hay will have fun this spring--this is why I want to use my tractor.---Practice makes perfect--I just have to lay it out and see how it works--I can figure it out.--No attachments is wider than the tractor so that is great.
Thanks a million guys.

Hello Jim,

If you want to make nice beds you should look at the Buckeye Tractor Co home page for one row bedders as it does it all in one one pass after the tiller operation.

You will have more time for yourself and easier weeding if you do not use plastic.

I used that TSC middle buster behind my 2005 Kubota B7510HST (21 hp engine, 17 hp pto, 15 hp drawbar) to break up the soil when I landscaped my new house a few years ago. Probably about 1/3 acre total. Followed the MB with my 4-ft Yanmar RS1200 rototiller on the back of the B7510.

Scratchers--usually called cultivators and, yes, you can rig up some type of bar to form a cultivator. Does that tractor of yours have a 3pt hitch?
