Sulfur dust is the best preventive. Dust your shoes, pant legs, and socks with the powdered sulfur. It's available at any nursery or feed store.

Sulfur dust? For chiggers? I've never heard of it, but I have smelled sulfur. Does this does smell like that, and are there any side effects to using it?

I tried the sulfer and it did not work for me.

What has worked for me is long pants and socks. Tuck the long pants into the socks. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I also spray my pants with permethrin. This stuff stays on for at least a year of washing and kills the chiggers and ticks. Lately I have tried ammonia which seems to have worked. I use a 50/50 mixture of water and ammonia. This may be working. I have not had ticks or chiggers this year and the permethrin I have not applied in at least a year.

I don't know how the ammonia would be effetive after being washed but I have been in areas and would have expected ticks and chiggers but nothing so far.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No matter how hot and humid the weather I wear long thin white pants that I tuck into my socks. This keeps the little buggers from getting to my ankles or waist. The permethrin does work. One year I saw two nests of chiggers hit my legs. One nest per leg. I watched them for about 15 minutes as the climbed my legs. After they had gotten from below my knees to my thighs they had all died.... The stuff works and will stay on your clothes for months. The military uses this stuff to treat their clothes.

Thanks VERY much. I've heard of Permethrin. Isn't it used to dust plants?
Is there a certain form of it to buy, and if so, where'd you get it?
Can't recall having seen it at home depot, but to be honest, I haven't looked.

If you web search for chiggers you will get alot of hits! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I read something today that suprised me. What I had been told years ago is that chiggers bite and bury into your skin. Then I read that that is not true. But today I read that it was sorta kinda. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif It was on a University website so I must be true. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We had a thread on TBN 4-5 years ago on this where we discussed mixtures and ratios. I take the stuff at REI mix it with water to dilute it a bit and pour it in a bucket or a big plastic bag. I put the clothes I want to treat into the bag and let the mixture get absorbed. Once everything is soaked I just let it air dry.

One of the websites I read today mentions hardware and feed stores. I looked at hardware, HDs, Lowes, and two feed/farm stores and could not find the stuff. It might be out there I just could not find it at the time.

The stuff I buy is in liquid form in a green bottle.

You must have big chiggers, I've never seen one, felt plenty of them though. Sulfer seems to work pretty well for me too.

I tried sulfer and it did not work for me. Maybe I had the "wrong" stuff. I have heard from others that it works but it did not bother my tick and chiggers. I wish they where not mine. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm hopping the ammonia works since it is cheap and easy to get... So far so good.
