Hi Everyone!
I'm a new land owner (31 acres) and live in southern Brazil. It is a very hilly landscape. It has elevation variation of 164 ft from the lowest to the highest level, in only 0.36 miles. The place is mostly covered by a secondary forest (mostly regrowht of a degradated native forest). My intention is to plant a pasture for lambs in part of the area. For this I'll need to cut some trees, remove stumps and roots. I'm thinking in doing the job with a utv. Is it possible? I am looking to buy one and did not made my mind yet between the Polaris Ranger (400; 800 efi or 900 diesel) and Can-Am Comander 800.
Do someone have some advice for me? Ah! Almost forgot. After clearing the trees and its remainings I need to plow and seed the grass!

Thank you Dennis, for your straight advice. I really started with the idea of a tractor, but as the terrain is very steep I am afraid a tractor will easily roll over. Therefore the idea of a Polaris Ranger which has the center of gravity closer to the ground (I believe). Another consideration I made, is that my land has strong restrictions from the environment authorities to be cleared. The trees that I will be able to cut are the smaller ones and, anyway it cannot be a clear cut of an area, only the smaller can go. The grass has to be planted in between the remaining bigger trees. My intentionis is to plant grass for pasture for sheep.

For most of the time the vehicle will be used to carry tools and from one place to another and to transport firewood and plant residues. For this I believe a tractor would be too much. And there is also the riding for fun...

You need a bull dozer if the ground is that steep. The Rangers will not do what you need.

Do you have pics of the property?

A tractor can be outfitted for steep terrain as well.

Also for extremely steep terrain the ranger 400 and rest of Midsize line do not have engine braking. You will need this feature.

Have you looked at the Honda pioneer?

Another option is the RTV 900 from Kubota. They are tough and powerful.

I already test drove a Ranger 400 (without any implements) and it worked fine in the steep path up and down hill. So I know they will go up and down. The question is how better the Ranger 900 diesel is suited for towing a disc plow than the 400. In the specs the horse power of the diesel is almost the same as the 400. It has a three cylinder engine whilst the 400 is single cylindered. Price is a BIG issue.

What does the disc plow look like? How heavy etc?

I own a 400 Polaris Ranger. I really like the machine. Since you have driven it you are aware it will free wheel down a hill if you take your foot off the throttle. This can be a little unnerving in hilly country especially with heavy load.

Both the 400 and Diesel use a CVT. These are belt driven transmissions. Based on your work description you will most likely wear out the belt fairly quickly.

I would not buy the Diesel. If you want a Diesel get a Kubota 900 RTV. It is the most rugged utv you can get.

Honestly though I think you need a 4wd tractor with wheels spread wide and lots of ballast down low. You are not going to pull stumps with a 1,200 lbs utv.

Thanks PapaPerk for your clear and sound advices. Surelly will take them in consideration. Will give me another couple of days to research and think about all this, before I take my decision.
