I just traded my ranger xp for rzr s. I enjoyed my ranger but decided to go a little less utility for our fun side by side. still have the rtv for the work stuff. the rzr s is the same width as a ranger and has long travel suspension so it soaks up the rough stuff. 63 mph bone stock. i wish it had turf mode like the ranger but the rear is always locked so it will tear up the yard.

I got to test ride a RZR and then the RZR-S in silver with the suspension upgrade and it was a very noticeable difference. The RZR is a great handling machine but the RZR-S was just incredible. I would love to have one!

I know the RZR S has 4wd, but I have to wonder how it compares to the old Honda Pilots? Remember those? They were only rear wheel drive but had a screaming fast 2 stroke 400cc engine and great suspension. At one time I had 4 of them. They were an absolute blast and really pretty safe, all things considered. I had 5 pt. harnesses in mine plus the arm restraints. With some engine mods and Comet clutch mods they would run in the low 70's and get there in a hurry. For only one year, 1985, Honda had 4 wheel suspension and reverse on the Odyssey. They were darn good as well. I ended up getting away from all of them due to the fact that parts were getting hard to find and were getting terribly expensive when you could find them.

If the RZR S is like them, but will haul 2 people, they'd have to be an absolute blast!! Have you by chance ever been in one of the Honda Pilots? I think they only made them in '89, 90, and '91 if memory serves me right. I don't know why they quit making them. My guess is because they were major bucks even way back then. I'm thinking that they were around 7 grand in 1990 or something like that.

I have a 1985 Honda Odyssey FL250 that runs rough but does run and is still a blast to ride. 5-pt harness, coil-over front suspension, 250cc 2-stroke, full roll cage with light, and solid rear axle.

I would love to replace the engine with a snowmobile engine so the clutching is the same but there is not much room in there, maybe a 500-600cc twin 2-stroke. I would love to have a Pilot with reverse but I am hoping to put in a 2-stroke with the electric reverse control that starts the motor backwards. The RZR is fun but there is something about the flat legged sitting position, belt harness, and fighter jet steering wheel that make the Odyssey/Pilot in a class of their own.

I have a buddy that has a pilot and a regular RZR.....

It has been a few years since I've piloted the pilot ;) but I'd say it would edge out the RZR by a little but the rzr, believe it or not, has much more travel etc. on the suspension.......so I'd put my money on the rzr handling better...

and, i'll tell you, if you've never ridin sidexside with a buddy and get out and tear it up some, you don't know what you're missing....you'll laugh until your stomach hurts.....

i sure miss the honda of old when they were truly ".....follow the leader" they weren't afraid to take chances and their stuff was quality.......it was there innovation that always made you excited to see what they were coming out with next.......

i've always wanted a pilot but i'd have to say that i think i'd rather have the rzr

maybe one day we'll fire up the ole' pilot and take them out and line 'em up......

this same buddy has all the cool stuff; 3-250r's, quadzilla, banshee, pilot and many more.....to him he'd rather have the atvs we grew up with than the cars that we grew up with or an old muscle car....

i raced Odysseys back in the early 80's.....there was a unlimited class....i had a kaw. 500 H1 engine i put in it....with migit tires on it and it would do over 90 mph in high gear....the 1 i had for trail ridin' had a 350 rotax...it was a blast!!!!

i looked at the RZR up close at last years hunting show. what a machine! it was like getting inside of a racecar almost. i'm waiting for someone to take the good points from every UTV and combine them into one package(speed of a RZR, suspension of a RZRs with ability to stiffen it for work, Kubota or Deere diesel engine, the room of a Ranger, hydraulic dump bed, Kubota cab, etc). then maybe i won't mind coming off $10,000+ for one;)

Dargo, it was funny you mentioned the pilot. that was exactly what i compared it to the first time i had the rzr out. I had driven a pilot several times and had a blast on it. the rzr s jumps like the pilot did. I had looked for a nice pilot to buy a couple of years ago but i could never find one in good enough condition that i would be happy with it. the pilot is a great machine but i think the 2o years of technological improvements put the rzr s ahead

Without question, the RZR is side-by-side King of the Trails, if that's your primary purpose for owning one. The "S" adds the topping to the cake...

If you want to see some good "home videos" of RZRs look at some from these two guys -- both riding primarily in West Virginia. Each has numerous videos so you can waste hours pretending you were there -- check their others out too:
