Putting up a 40 x 64 x 12' tall pole barn and trying to figure out the doors. I know I want one as tall as I can fit, but not sure of the rough in dimensions for different types of doors. I think a sliding door would give me the most height, but think I prefer the ease of a roll up or roll-back. Also, what are the rough in dimensions for a standard door 3' x 6'8" ?

On my building my overhead doors are 2 feet shorter than my eave height. 16' eave, 14' doors. I'm planning on doing roll up doors. I agree that sliders will allow for a taller door at the expense of sealing capability, however.

My 3068 walk way doors are prehung. From memory they require 38.5 inch by 81.5 inch rough opening. I have Plyco Series 95EV walk doors. (I just ordered an additional door today as I subdivide my building. Otherwise I would have no idea what model doors I have.)

Hope that helps.

Thanks for that. Wondering if I can get a 11' tall roll up or roll back door on a 12' tall eave height barn.

You can usually have an overhead door 1 foot shorter than the ceiling without a low clearance package. I have an 11 foot door with 12 foot walls.

I've got roll-up on two workshops and sliding on two.

The "garage height" roll ups on the right are not bad. The 12' (?)tall roll up on the left can stick and be a bear to get up.

The sliding on the two middle workshops take up a bunch of space but I think they are more reliable.

For a walk through door, add 2 1/2 inches to the size of the door for the rough in opening.

For the roll up door, you generally make the opening the exact size of the door, but you have to have enough room above the door opening for the size of the door all rolled up. Going off memory, I thought it was 2 feet of clearance above the opening and below the ceiling. I've put in a couple of them and bought them from Muellers. Before framing out my opening, I contacted them and spoke to a sales guy to be 100% sure. I want to know what sizes where available and what my framing needed to be.

Who are you buying the door from?

Not sure yet where to get the doors. My local building supply company does not carry the large barn/shop doors.

I don't think barn doors are an off-the-shelf item, but I could be wrong. The company that just built my pole barn makes all barn doors onsite except for some of the small entry (man) doors. For my barn, I am building them myself. It's a 10x10 opening, with split sliders.

For prehung doors, the rule I was taught was add 2 inches for a good tight final fit if your rough framing is nice and square. 3'x6'8" would be 38" x 82". Fewer shims required.

The roll up garage doors lose some height due to the rolled up door being so such a large diameter roll. I believe it was 2-2.5 feet height loss on 10-12 foot door. I have 12 ft walls and an 11ft traditional style slide up panel door because I wanted it insulated.

11' height still sounds pretty good for 12' eave. I don't think a sliding door could be any taller because no matter what type of door you use, you still hang it to a 2x12, which takes up a foot of height. So, you can fit a 11' roll back door in a 12' tall pole barn? That may be the ticket.

I have an eleven foot tall by sixteen foot wide garage door in my twelve foot pole shed. On the side wall I have a seven foot by eight foot sliding door. I much prefer the garage door as the sliding door gets snow blowing through it.

How wide can you get a roll back (garage type door) door? Will they sag in the middle when rolled up? And can you get an opener that will open a 11 X 16 or wider door?

Not sure the maximum width, but I do know that my cousins installed a 18 wide by 14' tall door in their shop last fall. That was a heavy beast. That one uses an opener turnin the jack shaft, like lots of car washes and commercial applications use. My 11X16 uses a commercial grade trolley style opener. I just had to order it to match the specific height. Each of the panels on my door has a one inch by two inch u shaped steel rib that is bolted to it on installation that gives it tons of rigidity and prevents sag. Since mine is not insulated it is actually really light. Without the opener I can lift it with one finger., but only as high as I can reach. I love the opener. I have a remote on my tractor and in my truck!

They can be built any size you want. I have one that is 24W by 12T. At work, the ones in shipping are 20x18
