I had a 30X50 pole barn built a few months ago. It is insulated with the thin silver insulation, not sure what it's called, but it's the kind builders put in pole barns these days. I intend to put an office in part of the PB. Do you think the existing insulation will be sufficient along the walls of the office that are adjacent to the building exterior? I intend to put up old barn wood as the interior walls of the office. I am wondering if I need to add a layer of rolled insulation on top of the silver stuff that is existing. Opinions appreciated.

It would not seem like enough insulation to me.

In my pole barn, the shell was put up and a slab laid, we finished the interior ourselves. We started with 1 1/2 Styrofoam between the purlings, then 6 1/2 inches of insulation on top of that followed by plastic for moisture. In the ceiling we installed 14 inch rolls.

During the heat of the summer in the heat of ND, that is when it is 100 degrees outside and the doors are not opened, it will stay 65 to 70 degrees inside. In middle Tennessee, you would be more concerned with the heat rather than the cold.

adding more insulation for an office is a good idea since you want a home away from home cozy feel. If it feels too hot or too cold, then you be less inclined to spend time there right ?

Hobbyfarmer,

I live in Wisconsin and have a 50x80 pole shed, of which 32x 50 will be finished. I have helped buddies finish off pole sheds in the past. We used the silver vapor barrier, of which you speak, then used batts in all four walls (3 exterior, 1 interior), and above the ceiling. I was able to get some old batts from a grocery store that was being torn down, just had to haul 'em. My plan is to use those above my ceiling. I will buy insulation for the walls. My buddies shed's are nice and toasty warm. My feelings are to insulate while you can, instead of wishing you had.
