Pole barn is '81 40x63x12' vintage with 10'9" x 20' opening slider doors.
I'm thinking a 10' x 19.2' rollup with remotes.
Door tracks bolted to parallel 4x4's lagged into pole barn posts set back to the inner side of the 8x8 posts to allow clearance & maintain existing outside sliders utility.
2x10 header set back to match the 4x4's.

Is there any better way?

I have an old TLB so I want to keep as much height as possible.

Barry -- Just curious, but what's the problem with the sliding doors you have?

Barry,

I'm planning on doing that (slider to OH door) on a smaller (12' x 12') opening and will be happy to take some pictures if you'd like.

My conversion will be done the best way possible-FREE! Well, "free" less my insurance deductable. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I had some wind damage and the contractor the insurance company sent out told me I could go that way for the same money as replacing the splintered header and building a new sliding door to replace the one that was broken when it crashed down when the header gave way.

I just decided that an OH door might be a bit more convenient (I know an electic opener would be). I can get an insulated door for $200-$300 extra now in anticipation of flooring and insulating that portion of my barn at some point so I'd probably go that way.

I can't really think of any reason I wouldn't want to make the change to an OH with opener but I haven't signed anything yet. Before I do, is there anything I might be missing here that I should consider?

They say it's an ill wind that doesn't blow somebody some good. Is there a manual way to roll the door up if the hydro is off for some reason?

Sure, you just pull a cord and disconnect the opener and then open it manually. It's the same as a home electric garage door opener. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

After putting rollup doors in my barn renovation I can tell you I will never go back to another sliding door in my life. They are so much easier to operate and way more convenient. Not to mention you get 100% closure unlike a slider.

Sorry to hear about storm damage
Pix would be great.
Be sure you have extra labor around when you mount that insulated door as it is heavy!!
I'll go with uninsulated which happens to be painted white on the inside so should reflect light better than the sliders.

Nothing wrong with the sliders except mud, snow, mud and snow, slippin & slidin to operate the doors vs a push button!

Mom is not impressed when the 11 year old goes down in the mud trying to push the door open. She had similar trouble closing the pickup door when she was 4, although no mud.

I have a remote for the car and a key pad on the garage for my door operater..... the key pad makes it easy and you can even set a number into it for a short period of time so your neighbors can access the door without giving them the permanent code... many options are available in door operators today..... Just make sure that the motor is properly sized for the door. I have seen where builders use light weigh openers on heavy doors and the opener doesn't last very long...

Contractor quoting 3/4 hp.

$998 door, $360 labor, $222 operator.

Most of his stuff is commercial where the door shoots straight up on a push button so he has a pile of remotes.
