I have a metal pole barn, standard build with the poles, 2X6 from pole to pole, and then covered with metal.
I have a desire to cover the interior with plywood, to make it a little more pleasant. But if I just cover the 2X6 with plywood, then I will have a huge mouse issue behind the plywood.
I would like to know if any of you have a solution to this? I fight the mice enough without giving them a fine home to live between the metal and plywood.

Thanks

I put plywood inside mine to dress it up and to be able to hang stuff. Your right the mice get in there. I took some down this summer for a remodel and an addition. I found about half of one of my saddle blankets in there. I guess if they weren't there they would be in my feed box or some where. I don't know how you would seal it up. I guess you have to decide what you rather have. I also have 4 barn cats on patrol.

Blocking or multiple cats.

Blocking with tedious detail is required to keep them out, but it sounds like you know that already.

Install a j channel on exterior wall at the bottom of the panel and drill a weep hole between the ribs. Have it made out of aluminum to keep it from rusting. Between the post put a 2x6 on the bottom and top to create a rat seal to attract your plywood. As long as you make every fit it will keep them out.

I was hopping that there would be an easy way.
I can block between the post and metal, but what do I do about filling the ribs in the metal where it sits against the 2x6? will mice will just eat the spray foam stuff?
Thanks

If you are talking about the ribs at the bottom on the outside where the metal is attached, they make a trim for that.

Dont know the technical term, but around here we call it rat-guard. It is usually put on before the metal cause it makes a nice shelf to sit the metal on when installing.

Similar to j-channel, only it dont create a channel that holes water.

Why not just toss a box or two of moth balls in the space. The smell will keep them away and if you find that they have come back in a few years, just spread poison. Mice only come into houses when there is food for them. What are you doing to attract the mice? Bird feeders are great for this. But so is open pet food. If you are attracting them with food, then it won't matter how tight you make your walls, they will still keep coming to the food.

yes rat guard is ideal solution in the beginning but when adding after the walls are on the rat guard usually wont work because the panels are to long to install it properly so J channel with holes drilled in it is a solution to the problem and easier to slide in from the sides. My suggestion is something that can be bought at any box store. If he has it custom made he can have it built as just a angle flash without the channel.
