In the spring I am planning to build a 60x40 pole barn. The future site is about half covered in trees, that I am going to start cutting this weekend. My question is what is the best way to get rid of about 30 stumps? I am thinking of either renting an industrial stump grinder or a large trackhoe. Which one would be faster and more effiecent? Also I would like to leave some of the surrounding area wooded, How much area do I need to clear out around the perimeter of the barn? I am not really concered with trees possibly falling and hitting the barn but rather getting into their root systems while digging the foundation. Any info or advice would be appriecated. Thanks Bob

depends on what size grinder. i have a rental store, so i would tell u 2 rent a nice size backhoe. try and get 1 with a 4 in 1 bucket.

there is no foundation with a pole barn. they will drill a 24 " hole 36" to 48" deep every 8'. they sould have no problem with the root system.

how big around is the bigest tree?

The best way is with a larger excavator that has a thumb on the bucket -- it can remove many of the stumps (and most of the roots with the stump) with one action. With a typical backhoe, you'll have to dig them out. With a dozer, you have to get into the woods behind them and push them out. With a larger excavator, it can simply reach in and pull them out, then knock most of the dirt off the root ball... which you can't do with other methods. If they're larger hardwoods, the excavator may still have to dig out the largest ones, but with a thumb to grasp the stump, they'll need to dig much less than otherwise.

When you cut the trees, leave a stump over a foot tall for them to "bite" onto... Heres some pics of clearing the site for my house and garage in the midst of the woods:

Cleary Buildings wanted at least 10' minimum on all sides in order to handle the large piece of sheetmetal when they put up mine. They actually ended up with less on one side and had to pull the steel up the front and over the peak for the backside roof.

I took advantage of yesterdays balmy 60 Degrees getting 5.5 hours of seat time finishing up grubbing the back quarter of my 2.33 acres.
Did most of it with my BX23 after having somebody brush hog it. Had lots of 1 to 8 inch trees to grub.
Most of them I dug out with the BH.
I only sawed down about half a dozen of them.
A problem with a stump grinder is you develop sink holes in the ground as the stumps rots off under ground over time.
