Hello all
I am starting to sinish my 24x36 pole barn. I use it as a shop and garage. I am covering all my nterior walls with 7/16 OSB I can not afford to insulate. I do have a pellet stove for heat ans without any wall covering it will take the chill off. My question is about a vapor berior. Should I do something before I cover my walls with the OSB? All sugeations would be great. My ceiling has a vapor berior and some insulation from the builder. I have also had some condensation issues where my concrete floor looks wet on some wet days. Do I need some venting?

I would insulate if at all possible for once you get the osb on it's going to make it tough to go back later and insulate later.
baring that i would screw the OSB on so you can easly remove it to insulate later.
I would almost go so far as to say if it were me I'd insulate and forget the osb rather than the other way around.

why would you think this? Why not just osb?

I have a 16 x 8 building and all i did was insulate it.

All I have to do to finsh it is install the paneling later.

Had i installed the paneling first instead; now I would have to remove the paneling to insulate then reinstall the paneling to finish it.

Why install the paneling twice?, or in your case the osb.

I don't think you'd get much advantage to a vapor barrier- the condensed air in the warm room will filter through the osb and then turn to water on the vapor barrier and soak the back of the osb. Without it the water will form on the inside of the sheathing (which I assume to be metal)- leading to rust potential but probably not too bad. I agree as above, insulation would be best, but if you're not going to use it, you probably don't need a vapor barrier.

I have several metal buildings - - - some at the farm and some at our manufacturing plant.

That having been said, it means nothing other than I have few people working out of metal buildings and if things are not working out they tend to complain. Thus far I have had no complaints about any of the insulated buildings, all of which have an internal insulation that is contained within a sythetic material which I BELIEVE also serves as a vapor barrier. I know it comes in different types and provides different levels of insulation, but do not know much more about the product.

My first question is why do you need the OSB now? What will it offer you that insulation will not? If you want to hang stuff on the walls, I am sure you can rig a temporary way to hang items after you insulate. I also use one other metal building that is actually owned by another individual, but is not insulated. I would never go that route.

If you do insulate and you have a large door that will be open at times, you need to try to get insulation that is less likely to be used by birds if it remains uncovered. I have seen some that have been torn apart by birds and others that haven't been touched. I don't know why that is?

If it were me, I would insulate the building with one of the products that provide insualtion wrapped in a barrier and deal with OSB or another type of panel in the future.

I used it in my garage when I lived in Great Falls Mt. It did help but, particularly on my (no insulation at all) garage door. If I remember correctly the actual R value was quite a bit less than 3.5 inch thick bats of insulation. I'd use it again where material thickness or weight were an issue.

I'm running into the same situation in my barn but I think I am going to forgo the OSB and insulate first.

The only smart way to do it.
-----Would you have a builder build you a house & tell him not to insulate it but come back in a year or 2 and insulate it or would you tell him to insulate it when he builds it?
