We believe we have a Pole cat hanging around, the four legged ones, it looked like a large furry weasel going across the back field so we are going to keep the Jack Russels on a leash. Anyone have experience with these guys. I read wild Turkeys don't like them, go figure.

I am pretty sure a polecat is a type of martin, and so are things like fishers. They are vicious beasts to say the least. Like a weasel on steroids. Eat squirrels mostly but are opportunists.

Up our way fishers are starting to come back after being hunted down years ago for fur. They are bigger than polecats and eat cats and beavers.

Do you have a lot of squirrels or possums in your area?

Fisher or Pine Martin. We have several in the area.Got them on our game cameras.Very efficient predators;mice ,squirrels, rabbits, birds etc.Very fast and efficient tree climbers,I doubt they would mess with your Jack Russells. They are mostly nocturnal hunters.Years ago my father lost all his peafowl,we trapped two Fishers just outside the barn. They do cover a quite large area in the hunt for food.As you may know they are a member of the weasel family.

Boy, you learn something new every day. I had always thought that the term Polecat referred to skunks exclusively, now I see that the term refers to several animals from the weasel family (skunks included).

We had some minks on the property, but I haven't seen one in some time. Squirrels, racoons and possum are numerous here.

Thanks for the education guys:D

Ya, maybe it was a fisher, it sure was big, look to be the size of a fox in body length.

Right just looked at a picture of a fisher that is the beast. Momma says yup that is it, the tale is what makes it obvious.

Did some research and they say they are on the rise in Connecticut too, that looks like a line through Ohio, lol.

If those start showing up on the property I'll have to reevaluate my safety rules.
So far, the most dangerous thing you can do on my property is get between a ground hog and his hole. Well, that and p*** off the little woman.
