.FWIW, fast growing wood w wide growth rings is not as strong or as dimensionally stable as the same species w a slow growth rate (tight rings).

What he said. Wide grain like that will crack, you might be lucky to 'control' the crack, but you ain't going to stop it.

If you're looking for something artistic, consider hiring a chainsaw carver. That's a piece of wood that a carver could have a field day with.

If you're going to slice it lengthwise, take two cuts from the center for a slab 3" or 4" thick. That's the table top. the two remains are the bench seats. lots of tricks available for legs of both. Whatever you do, make sure to treat it for powder post's or carpenters....oh yeah...wax the ends to keep it from cracking....

Slice it in 2" thick pieces, finish, put numbers and a cheap clock unit in them. Sell them as rustic clocks.

That is a great idea. I may just have to look for a chunk of wood just like it and slice it up on my sawmill.
