I have been asking around and can't seem to find anyone with a portable saw mill. Numerous poplar and oak trees cleared out to make room for our driveway. The property is located in North Central West Virginia and I figured I could have the logs sawn up to build an equipment shed or barn since the price of timber is down right now. It's not that anyone has refused the work, I just haven't been able to get in contact with anyone who does sawing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am stumped (no pun intended).

One of the mill makers maintained a database of sawyers based on location, but I am sure which one. Also there is an active saw mill group on Yahoo, ,it would not hurt to ask there.

Go to the "Forestry Forum . com"(no spaces...have to do that to keep the auto moderator from deleting) and post in the "Sawmills & Milling" section. There may me a mobile miller that can hep you.

The Forestry Forum and the Woodmizer company are excellent suggestions.

You might also try the Wood Web - they have a listing of sawmills here:

If you were closer, I'd be glad to cut for you!

I've been wanting to own one of those smaller portable mills. I don't want to do it as a business but there are always trees on my place getting blown over or hit by lightning, etc and I just hate to see them rot. There is a 135 foot tall chestnut rotting on the ground that has to be 3-4 feet in diamteter. Also, a pine easily 3 feet in diameter down in the creek bottom. I bet I could break even just by supplying my own siding for my tractor shed. But, the shed doesn't have to have siding and I just don't have 5k to put into a sawmill.

But wouldn't one of these:

and one of these:

just be tons of fun?

very funny with the stumped comment. Portable sawmill services are available in NJ, NY, PA and CT by mobile sawmill NJ. Not sure about Virginia though. Check the forestry database for services available in your area. Good luck.
