Can anyone tell me, how do you know for sure the posi is engaged and then unengaged? I look at the pedal and the movement of the level on the rear end, but it moves only about an inch in the back. I tried a few burnouts in sand but both wheels dig in regardless if the posi-pedal is pressed.

If it is locked it will not want to turn left or right

When you say it wont want to, does that mean it would be very difficult to turn left or right? I hit the pedal and I can still turn just fine. If I check it on dry pavement, would that be a better test?

Yep, that's why the manual warns of poor steering on a hard surface. It should be the same feeling as an old 3-wheeler. With my R-1's, it steers pretty good anyway though. One thing I have noticed, but have not explored further, is that sometimes, usually while going pretty slow while engaging it, I can feel the pedel move a little more, solidly, after I have pushed all the way down ... as though a dog was "waiting" to engage then finally did. If you had it locked and turned really tight, if you could do it at all, the inside tire ought to scuff pretty good. Also, if it's under a load, I don't really know if it can disengage till the load relaxes. Dunno if any of that helps.

chances are your not getting it to lock in then....on my 1800 the lock does not seem to go all the way down until I get a little slipage...try pushing it while in a turn if you are just checking. what way the wheeles are at differant speeds so things can line up. With the dif locked the tractor will want to go forward not to the left or right. once locked I sometimes have to back up a little to get it to unlock

If I check it on dry pavement...no no no no no no no ....you might break something

Make some full turns on a soft surface and watch to see if the inside rear tire is "differentiating" or digging.

I've noticed on my BX, I have to hold down the lock pedal for a while and can feel the lock engage through the pedal. Disengagement also takes some time and sometimes a bit of reversing.

I can tell when mine is engaged! When one rear wheel gets "light", it will spin and ground progress stops. Putting it in 4WD or engaging the diff lock fixes it and progress continues.

Enjoy!

Try engaging the diff lock and turning the wheels when the tractor is in 2WD. It should be less tendant to turn in 2WD with the differential locked together. In 4WD the front wheels just drag the front end in the direction they are pointing.

I can tell the difference with the diff lock on mine, but I live in sand not dirt, so it's more noticable.

edit - another good way to tell is by turning the wheels and engaging the diff lock while backing up. Backing up it turns more slowly than when going forward, again, in 2WD.

Simple test that shouldn't tear up your yard or your equipment. Find an immovable object with loose ground around it... like a big tree in the woods. Hitch the tractor to it securely (log chain) and gently tug until you lose traction (Don't get a running start! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif). You should be able to observe either one wheel spinning or two, depending on whether the diff lock is engaged.

Please excuse my ignorance, I thought that you should not try to engage this until you stop completely, press the pedal, then start again? Correct?
