Possible issue with 60\" MMM

I have a BX2230 w/ FEL, and 60" MMM. It has about 75 hours on it. Not sure when it started or if it was there from the begining but my mower deck gives out a rythmic humming /shake. The shake is not noticable except the the pins that hold the skalp wheels up shake to the rythm of the pulsing.

I had the dealer look at it and he said it was harmonics. Seems to me they should have harmonics engineered out of the machine by now. He told me to pay attention to it see if it gets any worse. They checked the bearings and gave it the once over and couldn't find anything.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Should I be concerned?

Did they check that the blades are balanced? Have you tried moving the blade positions around?

They dismissed that because they were to new. I will take them off scharpen and rotate them.

Re: Possible issue with 60\" MMM

I have a BX2200 w/ 2 year old 60" MMM & FEL that has had the same harmonics issue. I had brought it into the shop and they said there was nothing wrong. Kept hearing the hum and feeling the vibrations so I have spent a bit of time trying to figure it out. Here's what I have narrowed it down to - right or wrong. I think the root cause of the vibration is the belt/pulleys. I've had the cover plates off and watched/listened to the deck run and the vibration seems to vary with the belt movement. Then, while mowing some VERY wet grass one day I noticed the noise/vibrations decrease dramatically. Turns out the anti-scalp wheels and leveling rod/pins add to the noise considerably, but get a lot quieter when lubricated by the water in the grass.

Bottom line. I think the wear on the deck pulleys and belt contribute to the vibration, but the problem seems much worse than it is because of the scalp wheels and the two cover plates. I've removed them to test the theory and the deck souns like new! Now I just wear ear plugs!

Good Luck,
