I woud like to get a post hold digger for my tc24da. I have never used a 3 point auger before, I have always made my holes the hard way. How much travel does the auger have on the tc24 ? I noticed that my 3-point looks like it does not move far, maybe 8 to 10 inches. If I go to the expense of getting a post hole digger, I want to make sure I dig real holes, 36 to 42 inches deep. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I borrowed a post hole digger when I put the poles in for my garage. When it was in the up position I had probably 6 - 8" of clearance and I was able to get 36" holes from a standard PHD. Now I did have to readjust the PHD from the way the guy had it that I borrowed it from. I also dug the holes in 2 stages. Stage 1 was standard way of digging. Stage 2 was lift the auger up, reposition the tractor and lift the front w/ the FEL and redrop the auger in to the hole to get the final few inches. No problems. I don't remember how many holes we actually did, but it was probably around 20.

Hope this helps.

I use a PHD from TSC on my TC24D with absolutely no problems. I've got 9" & 12" auger bits and can dig until the gearbox is nearly in the ground. 36" to 42" deep holes are no problem, I've probably dug about 100 last year. I use the PHD for tree & shrub planting, I dig 3 holes close together in a trianglular pattern and scoop out the spoils with a shovel. The PHD has also helped with 2 decks.

You should have no problem using any of the standard PHD's on the market with the TC24DA

I have found Greenline Mfg to be a good unit as well the, I have the EM5000. I'm pretty sure I learned about them from this site, and I thank those who mentioned them ( I forgot the names-sorry) The EM5000 fits very well on the smaller cuts as well as sub-cuts. My JD 4100 only has 17 PTO but it handles a 12" auger in idle without a hiccup. Of course if the soil was rocks or clay I guess my song would be different? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The auger is well made with replacable teeth at the tip

I use a TSC PHD with 12'' auger on my TC18. I dug 19 holes for my pole barn with no problems. I went as deep as possible (gearbox almost in hole) and I got down about 46''. You will have no problem with the TC24 until you hit a big rock. If you think the rock is very big, then set your post on it. That's what I had to do with one of them.
Good luck,
Dave

thanks for the info. you really built up my confindence on this little guy. I just cant believe how much I have been using it. I probly should have gotten the 30hp, but other than a serious lack of rear weight, it does ok using the FEL. I threw a blade of my belly mower last week, but all the hdwe was there, I just had to put it back on. Dealer forgot to tighten 1 hyd hose, that was an easy fix. Now its time for my 50 service (more like 60 hrs). Getting ready for winter next. Glad I got a nice shed to park it in.

Northern Tool's model 1199 is the Greenline EM5000. I just had one delivered today with a 9 inch auger. Works like a champ with my TC30. Give it a little throttle and it'll even dig through the hard red clay we have here in central VA.

i have a worksaver post hole digger that i use on my NH 1520 (23hp) and it has done a tremendous job on the property, it will dig you a 12" hole in no time flat, be carefull if you hit a rock, back of on the pressure and it will pop that rock out of the hole, if you try to drop it down hard on the rock you will break a shear pin.

i have put in 300 trees, not to count how many land scape bushes and rose bushes, and making three holes together and shovelling out the hole you can get a pretty big tree root ball planted easily. i did have to replace the auger points as they wore out in this heavy rocky soil. but work saver sent them right out no problem.

jeff,
also be aware that a posthole digger is one of the more dangerous pieces of equipment you can attach to a tractor, you definately dont want anyone near it when it is running, and stay in the tractor seat. there have been amy serious injuries with this piece of equipment.

i have also seen some pretty big rocks thrown quite q distance with a lot of force by my post hole digger, so be carefull.
