Post hole auger that will go 48\" deep on Kioti?

Hi,

I want to set some posts very deep... as in, below the frost line. Does anybody have any experience with a power augur that would run on a compact tractor that would make a 6 or 8 inch diameter hole 48 inches deep? If so, which auger? Would a compact Kioti be able to handle it? What do such augurs cost?

Thanks

Thaddeus

Augers come in lots of different sizes, but you can certainly get either a 6" or 9" auger and it'll work on compact tractors. I don't know what size Kioti you're talking about, but smaller ones might or might not do the job a little slower. And I think most augers are only going to go 36" or less, but you can buy extensions to go on down to 48". Of course, your 3-point hitch might not raise high enough to use the auger that way with the extension, but you can bore without the extension partway, stop and put the extension on and continue. Then you may have to remove the extension before pulling the auger all the way out of the hole.

...and then you can put an extension onto an extension onto another extension... and so on and so forth... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

...Bottom line you can go "very very deep"... like drilling your own "well" with an auger... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: Post hole auger that will go 48\" deep on Kioti

Sounds like a plan.

Here's what I'm thinking, I want to put up a small cabin (16 X 16), a small shed (10 X 10), and an outhouse (4X6) on unimproved land. Then put 2 acres under cultivation. The design of the 3 structures would have 1 thing in common: no "foundation", but rather, built on treated lumber 4X4's set 48" deep in 8" diameter holes, set in concrete. I need to go down 48" here to get below the frost line.

So it sounds as though a compact Kioti with an auger will do the job.

thanks for the advice...

Re: Post hole auger that will go 48\" deep on Kioti

Have you considered renting a skidsteer with an auger? Bird got it right that to go more than 36" with a three point you're going to be doing a lot of adding/switching while the auger's in the hole, real pain and time consuming. A skid steer will drill the hole in one shot cause it can lift higher. You could also use a small backhoe attachment to dig the holes, set the posts and backfill around the posts. Also, since I tend to overbuild, for the cabin you MIGHT consider using 6x6 instead of 4x4, will support the weight much better (30.25 sq inches of area vs 12.25, more than double the load bearing area with minimal extra cost). If you want this to be a forever cabin they now make a plastic sleeve that slips over 4x4 and 6x6 posts and totally encases it. The plastic comes up higher than the finished grade so no water can get in the top, and it has a slight protrusion on the bottom so if you encse it in concrete it resists pull out. Totally isolates the post from ground and water contact. I wouldn't do a pole barn these days without using that stuff.

Around here 4X4 are .40 treated and 4X6 and 6X6 are .60 treated for ground contact.
U might be able to get the 4X4 in .60 but I don't know.
I'll second the SSL to bore holes, far superior to any 3 pt pto drive. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
That should stir up some posts.
If the CUT was a bigger model it would have enough lift range to use a 4'+ auger w/o all the changing hassel (tell that to the CFO bigger is better /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif).

You can probably rent the post hole digger for the job cheaper than the extension. I second the 6x6 posts for a foundation.

gerard,
Do you have further info on the sleeves? Sounds like a great idea.
Any info would be appreciated.

I used an 8" extension on my 48" long auger to go down 54" You can read about it and see some photos in Spencer's Pole Barn Project
