I was very hesitant to invest in a 3-point post hole digger after seeing so many bad comments, reviews and videos. I had 52 holes to dig for a Holly privacy hedge and some trees we are putting in. Had considered digging by hand as well as a gas powered hand held PHD which would have been around $300.
I spent $600 for a Speeco Model 65 with 12" auger. Put it together over the weekend, wasn't difficult though the instructions were not accurate/very helpful.
Took it out last night after work, hoping to be able to finish the job by dark and did all 52 holes in an hour and 10 minutes! Our soil is dirt and blue clay, not many rocks. The holes with clay struggled to bite sometimes, but starting at lower RPM and bumping it up always got it to catch and dig in after 10-15 seconds or so.
I am very pleased with my investment, i know it saved me MANY hours just on this job, dozens if i would have tried by hand, as well as a lot of sore muscles and blisters.
While the lack of down pressure on the PTO slowed the job down some, it still made the job so much easier than it would have been any other way.
Just wanted to put this encouragement out there for others on the fence about a PHD.
