OK, now I have to put up a fence, wood post type. I need a post hole digger and need the pro's advice on it. I have a BX2200, TSC near me and my local dealer has them also. What kind of prices are normal and what size auger is about the max for this tractor. Will also be using it for some small trees in a row on the back of my place later.

thanks

DannyD,

Make sure the post hole digger you choose will work with the BX 3PH. Not all will.

I modified my BX2200 3PH lift rods to get more lift, which works real well with the back blade and rake, but when I tried to hook up my PHD (Rhino HPHD model) I found it impossible to do. I would need about 8" extensions on the lower arms to make it work... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Not even close. Now that was with the standard length auger...

Someone in the past posted pictures of a bx with a (I believe) standard PHD on it, so some will work. There are also some BX specific PHD out there I understand, but can't point you at any...

Let us know what you end up with. I would guess my bx would turn my 14" auger without problem...but that is only a guess... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have a B7500 and have dug several holes using the PHD I bought from TSC, which I considered cheap. Most of the holes I dug were in very hardpacked gravel due to putting up a boarding kennel and having the dozer grade quite a bit of it off and I was very surprised at how many post holes I've dug with the unit as is and using the same dinged up auger bit and blades.
With all the fencing I've put in, sign posts, dish post, helping the neighbor bury their dog, burying various other things... I've probably dug 100 holes with it, which seems like a lot to me, but I'm sure a drop in the bucket to others. I have the 9 in bit.

Just got my 4310 ePowrReverser Saturday. NICE! JD has a PHD for $900 plus, Rankin has one a little less and Northern Tool has one at half the price. Is "you get what you pay for" true here? Is the Northern Tool unit worth looking at. Besides shear pins what breaks on these things - maybe gearbox? Except for occasioanl outbuilding posts we'll be doing a lot of fencing with 6"dia treated poles. 9" auger bit will work. Besides making it easier to work on out of plumb holes, is there good reason to get a 12" bit? Also curious that if a hole drills out of plumb can the auger be worked/tilted to the side to plumb a hole up?

Thanks

Joel

( Seems like the 22" raised beds need 90 hp or more? ) JoelT, Welcome to TBN and congratulations on your new baby. I don't know a lot about the PHDs, but I have read many posts regarding them. One thing, a 12" can be used for planting trees in many cases, that's a good use. As for the plumb, you can make the auger go straight if you move your tractor to compensate for the arc in the PHD after you have drilled down a little. Drill, move, drill move until it is straight. As for fixing out of plumb, you'll have to ask someone with experience on that. Again, welcome and I hope you have years of good seat time. John

Danny --

The Land Pride PD10 is designed to fit on a BX, and comes with a 30"-long auger. On my BX23, with the 3ph lifted to full height the tip of the auger is maybe eight to ten inches above the ground. My dealer says there is a 7" extension available, but I haven't checked into it.

I have a 9'-diameter auger. Max allowable PTO speed with the PD10 is 300 RPM, or a little over half throttle on the BX. I can't detect (by ear) any load on the engine at all when I dig with it. I believe they also have 6" and 12" augers available, but have no experience with them.

Hope that helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I haven't found a better way to fix an out of plumb hole then to use the crow bar I use for ramming and enlarge the hole. The most important thing is to minimise the amount of dirt disturbed and to return at least as much of the dirt removed from the hole when ramming around the post. I've had a couple of post pull out of the ground once I've tensioned the fence and that's because I've been lazy with the ramming.

I bought a PHD from TSC last year and put in approximately 88 nine inch holes. Actually had no problems with it..

Danny,

I just bought one from Vassar Equipment Co. in Perkins Ok for my BX 22. The PHD is built for low profile tractors... no rocks here, but plenty of roots in clay soil. No problem with 9" auger digging at just over idle rpm .
