What's the largest posthole digger that I can reasonably use on a 1700D? I'm in Central Texas and know that there will a few rocks and hard layers of caliche. I need to go about 3 feet deep and need each hole to be 12" in diameter.

I use one on my 1500 and a 12" auger, it can drill down about 700mm depth with the auger I have and it does it easily. Rocks, roots and the like don't slow it down much. If it won't drill I jump on the frame to give it a start.

Power would not be an issue. All post hole diggers are not created equal. The main thing you need to look at is whether the digger will fit your 3 point and allow proper up and down movement with the 3 ft auger you desire. Many diggers have different top link holes that allow considerable up/down adjustment. There are numerous videos showing proper use of these. You might find some of them informative.

With my limited experience with diggers I learned the sharpness of the auger bit is important in hard ground.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I can get the wife to jump up and down on the digger when I hit the caliche. NOTE: If she sees this post she'll be jumping up and down on me.

Winston1-Thanks for that info. I wouldn't have thought of it. I'll definitely be looking for those videos.

That too, my auger has a bolt on leading edge which can be sharpened or replaced.

Read up on safety, first. That is supposed to be one of the most dangerous things you can do around farm equipment.

just used mine with a 12" auger until I hit the hard packed clay 28 inches down, but that was enough for me.

Cal's right, I shouldn't have said that. You could very easily get caught in the PTO shaft and that would be disastrous for anyone on there.
