Posthole Digger with 9\" auger performance

I'm seriously contemplating purchasing the PHD and 9" auger, but I wanted some real life opinions from some current owners of this combination.

I've searched the archives and really haven't seen any messages related to drilling in rock. The area I want to drill has alot of white limestone rock. Not just individual pieces but a whole shelf area where you would have to drill right through it.

Has anyone actually used the PHD to do this? Does the auger come with "teeth" or can "teeth" be put on it?

I'm trying to weigh the cost of someone drilling the holes for me at a higher cost or to me just purchasing the attachments and doing it myself. I would rather purchase the attachments but wanted to know if it is strong enough to go through rock.

Thanks in advance....

Chris:
With luck, 400 series people will respond.
On my 1845, I can stall the auger against a root or rock without shearing the pin, suggesting that the PTO relief valve is set conservatively. I suspect that to do serious rock work, you'll have to have aggressive teeth which cut the rock but don't let the auger screw in until the rock is breached. The augers from PT don't look to me to be that type, but I have little experience except in my easy soil. Wroughtn Harv has posted in a number of threads about augers. I'd try to get his advice and also some from Power Trac. It may be that you want to adapt a rock bit to the PT head.

I have the 18” auger and it stalls VERY easily (this is compared to the 12” auger I used to use on the back of my 8N). I would be extremely surprised if the 9” auger would drill through limestone rock.

Does anyone know the power differences between the two power heads? The planter head looks more powerful from the website pictures. Robert

Re: Posthole Digger with 9\" auger performance

you got the money to buy an auger NOW now you just have to buy the head and pay for shipping.

can't help you with your limestone question, we go through shell with our pt 9" auger all the time.

AND

Yes their are attachments to be welded or screwed onto your auger to get more bite. have to dig for the info and get back to you!

good luck /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
