Ah, this all sounds just so familiar. My M-I-L mowed the pastures at the farm with a JD820 until she was 86 years old. I was so glad when a back problem forced her to quit. She could tear up more stuff that any 10 men I know. Ofcourse, her back problem gave my S-I-L the excuse she needed to come home from New Jersey to live at the farm. Now, there's two peas from the same pod. Not long after she arrived home she filled the fuel tank with water and the week after that she filled the radiator with diesel. I must admit though, that she has got to be a lot better since then. My M-I-L on the other hand has got worse. Since she can't drive her tractor or her car, she spends her time mowing the yard with a JD garden tractor. The problem is that she is now as deaf as a post and her eyes are failing. I'll get a call to come look at her GT because it isn't mowing "worth a darn". When you jack it up to look underneath you are likely to find just about anything wound around the blades... garden hose, baling twine, barbed wire. I don't know where she finds it all. She even mowed over a stump going down to the lake and had a small log jammed in the deck. The belts were squeeling like a banshee and she couldn't hear it. I think we did well getting her off the tractor and out of her car. I'm not going to be the one to tell her she can't mow with her riding mower. We've got her pretty well fenced in now so only the garden hoses and the occasional stray dog or cat are in mortal danger.
As someone else said, "In-laws, you gotta love them". I wouldn't change them though. Life would be so DULL.
