The purpose of a power beyond valve is so that if you are trying to use the first valve, the low pressure "waste" oil has some place to go if the next valve in the system is also trying to do something.
For example, on a tractor if you are trying to lower the loader and raise the three-point at the same time, if you do not have power beyond the fluid leaving the loader valve has to have enough pressure to overcome the resistance on the three-point.
As such, without power beyond you could end up with a situation where you could not lower the bucket in float because there was not enough weight pushing down to create enough pressure to raise the attachment on the three-point.
Or in the case of a log splitter, if the log lifter and the splitting Ram were both being used at the same time with the log lifter being the first valve, you would not be able to lower the log lifter unless there was enough weight pushing down on it to overcome the resistance of the log being split.
With power beyond, the fluid that is needed by a valve is used and then returned to the tank via the low pressure tank port.
Any extra fluid that is not used, is sent on to the next valve via the high pressure power beyond port.
