I have an air compressor powered grease gun. Is there any reason I should not use it on my tractor as long as I keep the pressure say at 40 pounds

Regardless of the air pressure watch your grease seals. You can blow them out. I haven't done a hand grease gun for decades. I used an air grease gun like you are using for many years. Much better than a hand grease gun. This year I switched to a Lincoln battery powered grease gun. I'll never go back to air power.

I used an air powered one, but never turned the air pressure down. It was usually about 100 psi.

I use a pneumatic grease gun and it says the air pressure should be set at 80 psi. I bet the battery powered one is awesome but see no reason to buy another gun...yet!!

JD recommends one type of grease for the tractor / mower etc and a different type for the Backhoe, so I have two pneumatic grease guns. I've set the grease end so it is just finger tight. Some of the zerks seem hard to get the gun off and loosening the tip makes that relatively easy. Pressure is set as per guns specs - around 70 -80 if I recall.

Been using air powered for years, air always set to 120psi. You may get by with 40psi if you don't have any cantankerous Zerks, but you'll need to crank up the pressure if you do. I tried using low pressure, it takes an extra shot or 2, and slows me down. That's why I like to use maximum pressure. It certainly won't hurt your grease gun or tractor.

Are you even getting any grease in at 40 psi ?

Air powered guns have a ratio of about 40:1, so at 40 psi your only pushing 1600# at the tip.

Battery powered have tip pressures of about 6000# or better, hand pumps can get that high also.

As the others said, run it at the pressure it calls for.

I have the Lincoln 14.4V Powerluber. I have had it long enough now to tell you what I think of it. The best thing about this gun is that you know when the gun has run out of grease. You can hear it. With the pnuematic guns that I have owned they made the same sound. Whether it had grease in it or not. Maybe you are getting grease to the bearing or maybe not. And these things are just plain handy. I don't have to move the equipment close to an air compressor. It's one of the best tools I have purchased in many years.

I changed the oil in my tractor last weekend, and greased her up while I was at it. Nothing like having to use one hand to hold the hose on the fitting underneath the tractor greasing up the brake & clutch linkage. The other hand is holding the handle, using gravity to pull down the body of the grease gun, and then pushing it against the tractor to pump it.

That was the last time I will do such a thing for normal maintenance.

I went to TSC today and bought a Campbell Hausfeld pneumatic grease gun on sale for... $14.99. I also bought a cheap 50' air hose extension, which I have long been overdue for a long time, only previously having a 25 footer.

I like it a lot!! Can't believe how well it works. Greasing is now a 2 handed operation!

I couldn't justify a battery powered grease gun because I keep my tractor in the garage and I only put on about 30 hrs per year.
