A friend of mine just bought a '99 JD 4400 with power reverser. It has a loader and backhoe. He asked me if I thought the noise when clutch was engaging form forward to reverse is normal. I believe this a similar set up to the Kubota hyd. shuttle shift and uses a clutch pack. On the Kubotas the more weight/load that is on the tractor the more pronounced the sound of the clutch engaging is, which is normal. Just wanted to check with you guys to see if I'm in the ballpark with this. The last JD's I worked were the 50/55 series so I'm not that familiar with this model. Any help or opinions would be appreciated. [any breakdowns or scematics John? Curious to see how the system works]

Thanks,
Kubmech

Thanks John, once again you come through.

If it's a 4400, it is a Sync-Reverser not a Power Reverser. The clutch must be dissengaged while you shift, you do not need to stop though. Mine does not make any noise.
Power Reverser's are found on 4500, 4600.

Now you're confusing me. The breakdown JM shows has 2 clutch packs with a gear attached to each one which I'm "assuming" are one for reverse and one for forward. That makes sense to me. Although a synch reverser would work as you described I don't understand why you would need two seperate clutch packs???

...it is a Sync-Reverser not a Power Reverser...

You're absolutely correct Mike... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

I had pulled this picture from a "World" parts manual (via the internet) for the 4400... with cabs, front pto, etc. things the US market doesn't have currently... I don't believe the power reverser tranny is on any 4400 anywhere in the world... from my "quick" searches... but anything is possible... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

(...but all the JD PowerReverser's use clutch packs from compacts to large ag units...)

So the synch reverser has no clutch pack?

 / Power reverser noise #8
No, the sync reverser doesn't have clutch packs... uses standard clutches (one for trans. & one for IPTO)... then there is a couple "flavors" of sync reversers... /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

I've got a bunch of pages (web & not in exact order...!) to weed through... I'll eventually get there... hopefully sooner than later... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Sorry John, I did'nt mean to ask a hard question. Thanks for all the help. So basically if he has the synch reverser I would think any noise while shuttling sounds like a problem.

Just in case anyone is interested. The noise turned out to be the front axle drive shaft. It had some play in it and would cause a clunk intermittently when shifting from forward to reverse. Again Thanks for the help guys.
