I keep hearing about this stuff. What is it and do I need it in my equipment.

I use PS Diesel Fuel Supplement year-round (2 oz per 5 gal), mainly for anti-gel in winter, but it also provides other benefits as well, at least if their claims are true. I've never had a gelling problem. I also use it in my outdoor home heating oil tank and have never had a gelling problem since I started using it. Here is a link to more information abut the product.

Do you need it? If you're in Western MD and store your equipment without heat or outdoors, I think it's cheap protection against fuel gelling. Otherwise, it's probably a matter of personal preference rather than need.

I get mine in a quart bottle at Walmart.

I also keep a bottle of diesel 9-1-1 around just in case, but I've never had to use it.

There are lots of threads in this forum about additives such as PowerService. You might want to try a search. Get comfortable, because you will be reading for a while.

I use Power Service Diesel Kleen (silver bottle) in my truck and tractor in the warm months and Power Service Diesel Supplement (white bottle) in the cold months. I like it, truck seems to run a little stronger and I feel confident that it will take care of any bad fuel I may unknowingly purchase. You can always find it at Wal-Mart and most large truck stops at a good price.

I'll try to provide a fair summery here. I'm not trying to restart a debate.

One of the things that Power Service does is increase the cetane rating of your fuel. The debate is whether or not the chemical in Power Service that does this causes the diesel to deteriorate more quickly, shortening its shelf life. Many, many people here have used Power Service for years without reporting any fuel degradation trouble at all, however looking at the chemistry, it could be an issue if you use it in a storage tank. This is especially true if the tank gets warm (sitting in the sun). If you want to use Power Service you should consider adding it to the vehicle or equipment when you fill it up.

Documents from Power Service say this is nothing to wory about. Documents from a large oil company (Chevron, I think) say it could be an issue.

If you think you are just buying a fuel stabilizer when you buy Power Service, you may want to look at a product like PRI-D or Sta-Bil.

check out the silver bottle, diesel kleen i believe it is.it says that it is a fuel stabilizer also, diesel kleen that is.i use the silver bottle not the white one due to my geographic location, mississippi.it rarely gets below 20 degrees f in my neck of the woods.i emailed power service with the ? of which to use and they said that i would get more use out of the silver bottle, diesel kleen, vs the white bottle, diesel fuel additive, since i shouldn't have a problem with gelling.the representitive even said that the silver bottle had a diesel fuel stabilizer in it for slow fuel turnover.

I agree with whitearrow: I just use silver bottle and never look back, in tractor and pickup.
