I went to visit a friend a couple days ago, hadn't seen him for a few years and had him and his wife on my mind. He is 88 years old and his wife is 90 and their health isn't the best.
He is a fellow pt owner, I have mentioned his pt before. His is a1996 model pt 418 or I should say used to be a pt 418. He had made a few minor modifications. As I was approaching his pt I noticed a tail pipe coming out the back of the machine with what looked like a car muffler on it, it was. When we got to it he started it up, he had moved the choke to behind the seat, and it started right up.
I noticed how much quieter his pt was than mine and how much smother it ran, it sounded sweet. Then I noticed that the hood had been raised about 6 inches and it had legs under it to make the raise, with the back legs fixed so they could hinge back. He raised the hood and under the hood was a three cylinder Geo Metro motor. I don't know how many horse power those Geo motors have, maybe someone on here knows and will share.
He said that it wasn't too difficult to put it in there, but it sure looked tight to me. He had to cut a little on the tub and also cut out a section of the side of the hood for the air cleaner to stick out. I asked him where he located the pumps and he pointed down towards the bottom of the engine and said that they fit neatly in there, I couldn't see them. The engine has a radiator on it so it is water cooled.
As many of you know the pt418 doesn't have an oil cooler, he has added about a 5 or 6 gallon tank on the side of his pt where the operator deck is. It fit neatly on there, but made entering the operators deck a little harder from that side.
His pt still has the manual 3 point hitch and not a quick hitch, but he has added a few extras to the hydraulics. You know how when you have picked up a heavy load and go to set it down you have to be careful or it will fall down, well he took care of that problem by teeing in a valve block parallel with the valve to raise and lower the bucket and put an orffice in it that restricts the flow when he wants to have a fine control of the lifting and lowering of the arms. He has put smaller atv tires on it to slow it down some and to add torque, but he said that he took off the parking brake discs and pin but he put scrubber brakes on it and fixed them so they could be locked in the on position.
He said that he has leg problems so he fixed a leaver so he could tram the machine by hand when he was tramming it any distance so he could move his feet around.
I don't believe there is anything on his machine that he hasn't modified, and that goes for his attachments to even though I never saw them all he had told me about doing that a while back.
I never noticed any oil leaks on his machine even though it looked like it was way past due for a wash job.
Oh yes Bob Rip he has a winch that goes on the back but he took it off, he said that the winch needed repaired from being loaned out and that he could fix it but wasn't going to unless he needed to do something his self. That way those that would borrow it and bring it back broken would get a truthful answer when he told them that it was tore up.
Sorry for the long post but I am sure that there was other modifications that I forgot to mention. I bet you all are glad my memory ain't what it used to be.
