So recently the battery died in my dad's power-trac, we charged it and was able to run it, but then it wouldn't even charge my dad went out and bought a new battery he said it was 25 amps lower than the original battery, but he feels that shouldn't make a difference, when we turn the key to start it, it clicks once then nothing, my dad say's he has headlights, and a spark, but the engine won't turn over, is it the starter?

Sounds like the new battery is dead as well. Could be a bad new battery. I have had that happen.

Which PT? What year? What engine?

Can you give us chain of events on new battery?

New battery installed? Sits for a while or this is immediate?

Do you have a volt meter?

Are you sure the previous battery was bad?

Electrical on the PT is pretty simple, 2 Key things you need to do is ,1, make sure the battery you bought is good. second, while the batter is out, completely remove your battery cables and clean both ends. Also clean the areas they attach to the tractor.

Once we know which PT you have we can tell you what to look at in the starter area.

New battery is completely fine and is holding a charge, old battery is dead, power trac is a pt422, new battery does have a charge and is fine. old battery said it was a 475, new battery is a 275. is it to low of a battery?

Is your PTO switch on?

Out your meter on the side of the solenoid going to starter and see id voltage is present.

Does the headlight dim when starting?

Does the starter voltage drop to around 8 v when starting?

275 to 300 CCA should be good enough for that engine.

lights turn off completly when trying to start, and there is also like a high pitched whining when trying to start coming from somewhere.

On my PT 422 model year 2000, when I start it the lights go out when cranking. I am pretty sure the ignition switch turns off the lights while cranking. You need to monitor battery voltage during cranking. You could do this by putting a 12 volt light across the battery and seeing if it gets real dim or goes out while cranking. It should not if the battery is OK. A voltmeter will work too. You say the battery is good, but don't tell us how you know this. If they tested it at the store where you bought it it is probably ok. Try jump starting it from a car battery. If it then cranks then you PT battery is bad.

If the cold cranking current was 475 and the new one is 275 amps, then it should start when new. However, after a couple of years you will probably have to replace it again.

I'm going with J_J on this and asking if you made sure the PTO switch is off before you try to start it. After 13 years, I did that for only about the 2nd time a couple weeks ago.... I thought for sure I had lost the ignition switch, got frustrated and walked away. Came back an hour later and saw the PTO switch on.... :banghead: Turned it off and RRR RRR RRR VROOOM!

Check that first before expending any more energy.

After that, I'd try jumping it off of a car. If that works, your new battery is probably suspect, or the battery cables may have failed.
