Hey guys! With the anniversary of last year's retched ice storm only a week away, I'm reminded of going without heat for two nights, until I could borrow a generator from where I work.

With a little money left over from Christmas, I'm thinking about buying one. I don't own a welder, and am occasionally in need on one on the farm.

Presently I don't have two-phase wiring in my barn. So, when I do borrow a friend's welder, I have to change the socket on my dyer outlet and run an extension cord out the window. PITA!

I found this welder on eBay: Powerland 100 AMP Welder and Gas Generator 6.5 HP - eBay (item 190364544795 end time Jan-21-10 13:00:56 PST)

It's in my price range. Does anyone own one of these, or know anything about this brand?

I'm thinking it would work well for as little as I'd use it. Plus it runs on one of those 'Honda-type' motors, that people seem to have decent luck with.

Thanks in advance!

No good, stay away from it.

Only 100 amp welder and 1/2 kw generator!

it's not a good welder and definetly not a good generator.

Look for a decent used unit, there are all kinds of deals now on used equipment, for a little more money I've seen pro quility welder gennys for sale.

Thanks for the input JB!

What would be a good match in terms of amps and kw's?

Thanks.

BTW, I've had my eye on Craiglist and at pawn shops, but nothing yet.

It's gonna be tough (almost impossible) in that price range but 180-200 amp and 4-6KW would be nice.
There are alot of welders on CL now, but the pro ones are still a high compared to the one you listed. the cheapest I found for a used one was 750, which is cheap as the others are 2-3 grand. Still a good deal compared to new cost though.

I've got a Honda ew170, which is 170 amp welder and 4000 watt generator, it's not pro grade but pretty decent unit and I got it very cheap, (~$500.) but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for one of these, there's a used one now on CL for $1500. which is to high IMO.

Good luck, JB.

I agree with the others you want at least 7KW gen and at least 160A dc for the welder to not be disappointed. You may not be welding much in the 160 Range but this size would at least have a decent duty cycle around 130A.
You might be better money wise to get a buzz box welder and get a dedicated generator.

BondoBuilder,

I have a Lincoln Ranger 8000W Welder/Generator that would serve you well. 225 welding amps. 120/240v Kohler engine.

I'm with JJ 8kw is about minimum to run a shop or house (yes I know it can be done on less this is just my opinion). I've got a Miller Bobcat 225 pretty much the same as JJ's. I found mine for just about $2000.00.

You would be much better served picking up a Lincoln Tomb Stone Buzz Box or a Miller AC/DC welder. I got a Miller 225 amp used for $100.

Then get yourself a regular portable generator. You can pick up a good 6,000 Watt 8,000 Watt Surge genny for the $700 range. You can run the welder off it or have a electrician come by and wire up a plug in your garage.

I agree it would be easier to find one of each for a reasonable price, but those Miller and Lincoln combo units are sweet, more geared to the pro portable welder though and not cheap.

I've got that Honda portable which goes up to 170 amps, plenty enough for my needs but the genny is only 110 volts, don't know if those other portables are 220 volt or not?

Could a buzz box at say 140 amps welding, be powered by a 5kw genny? Then you could make up your own portable package with stand alone genny and welder.

There are more portable welders now than ever on CL.
This one looks decent.

Thanks for the input gentlemen. Can someone fill me in on what a buzz welder is? Is that just a nickname for a welder that runs on 110?
