I am considering buying a powermaster 851/861 diesel from a guy who just completed a bottom end engine rebuild. He said when he bought it the engine was seized. He investigated and found a bad piston and a bent rod. He pulled all the pistons and replaced rings and bearings, etc. Put it all together and the engine ran but had a lot of blue smoke (less when warmed up). He then replaced the injector pump but not the injectors and the smoke remains.
My question is what might cause the smoke? He says he has run it for about an hour since the rebuild so I would assume that the rings have seated. The smoke seems to follow the throttle to some extent. Definitely more smoke just after increasing the throttle. We didn't have any way to put it under load at his place. Could the injectors be worn out and just letting too much fuel in? I'm wondering if the smoke is just raw fuel.
Also, I called it an 851/861 because the serial number is rusted out. The only numbers we could read were the last two, '77'. He said that when he first bought it, the clutch was "funny". Once the tractor was moving, he could put the clutch in halfway and it would stop. If he put the clutch in all the way to the bottom, it would start moving again. He adjusted the linkage and changed the hole in the linkage that the clutch lever goes into. Now it acts like a single stage clutch... push it down and the tractor and pto stops lift it up and they both start. Could this be a bad two stage clutch that is now way out of adjustment or is it more likely to be a single stage clutch that is now more properly adjusted?
Other than that, and needing a voltage regulator, it isn't in bad shape, considering its age. Seems like it might be a good second tractor and a fun restoration project but I don't know a lot about the engine and don't want to buy a boat load of trouble. He wants $4000 for it I thought I might offer $2500. Thoughts?
